I bought two PII 450s online, and managed to get them in their 'boxed' version. {Which means the heatsinks and fans came with them pre-installed.} But they're constantly going into thermal overrun, so I bought better cooling setups to put on them, My problem is, I can't get the original heatsinks and fans off. Does anyone know a proper / good procedure to take them off?

Since your asking us, I guess yours is a little more complicated than this... but on mine the fan has screws which screw into the spaces in the heatsink. That is how it is attached. Yours may be different though

Retail PII heatsinks are held on with Rivscrews.
They look like normal rivets, but screw out.
You will need an allen key with a tightish fit to unscrew them.

If I remember correctly it takes a T-15 torks screwdriver to fit the "allen-head" correctly http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

My p2 266 had only two clips you popped off, and then it was only thermal paste, which really surprised since how hard I had to pry it before it came off.....
But I think yours might be different......

They're screws?! Wouldn't have ever thought that. Thanks! {I still have to try it out}
As for PII 266s, I guess I should have mentioned it was a SECC2 casing on the faster PIIs and P!!!s, not the SEC on the older PIIs

I'm not having any luck 'unscrewing' the rivscrews. I checked intel's site, and the only method of removing the heatsink involved drilling them out with a special rig. I've got a feeling getting my hands on one of these rigs will be mighty expensive {if even possible.}

Here is a site that had some detailed instructions.

For some reason, I can't get anything after the first page now. I hope it's just my browser acting up. I recall it had something to do with using a proper sized screw, as you put turn the screw into the CPU case, it pushed the pin out.
