Extension: .dll or .exe, most likely.
They're stored in the internals of Windows somewhere, probably as resources in some sort of compiled code (I'm guessing Gdi.exe or Gdi32.dll). They're not normal .BMP files or something like that, though.
Sorry. I'm guessing you probably wanted to customize them, right? I don't think it'd be very possible. But then again, maybe it would. You might conceivably be able to extract the resources from the DLL or EXE file, modify them, and recompile it (assuming you also had the source code, that is). But other than that, I don't think it'd be possible to customize them. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

If you were real good with a hex editor you could probably change the hexcodes for the bitmaps in the .dll file and then not have to recompile code. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif But you'd have to find them first.

You can change the toolbar backround in Windows 9.x by adding the string value BackBitmap to the;
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar Registry key.
The "value data" for the new BackBitmap value is the full path to any .bmp image on you hard drive.

* Be careful when editing the Registry, I won't be held responsible for damage caused by improper editing.
