You mean for an emergency recovery thru DOS?
You would have to make a bootable CD to get your system up.

How do I do create a bootable DOS CD? After doing so all I would have to do is execute the program from DOS, right?

Jad, if you have ghost 2001, go to the help file and find that subject. I believe you will need a boot FLOPPY to do this. Why not just break down and put in a floppy drive? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I was waiting for that one.

I have a dead floppy drive sitting here on my desk, second one in a year. I don't ever use it. Floppy disks go bad. I don't even want to mention the time I had to go to OfficeMax and ask them to make a bootdisk for me. They make too much **** noise. And I do not want to buy another one.

One more thing, kids will stick stuff in them, most likly the reason for two dead in a year. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Does anyone know how to make a DOS boot CD?

What are you using to burn with jad?
I'm only familiar with making bottable disks with Nero.

Adaptec Easy CD Creator has a bootable CD option.

So I don't need to do anything other than make a bootable CD and just add the files that Ghost wants to install on floppy?

I was trying to figure out how to make a bootable CD with Nero without using a floppy drive and haven't been successfull in my first three attempts.
Making it with a floppy drive is a piece of cake, thats how I do it.
Without a floppy drive, Nero says that you can use an image of a boot disk as the source of the neccessary boot files and suggests WinImage in making the boot image.
I have made a couple different images of a Win-98 boot disk, but have been unable to get them to properly boot the system yet.
(There are some advanced settings for this I may have to play around with).

Anyway, once you get a bootable CD, then all you need to do is put the necessary Ghost files on the CD alond with the image.

I'm still messing around with this bootable image, I'll let you know if I figure it out.

$30 local is not cheap.

i got a brand new one here for you for 12.00 shipping not included. about 17.00 total. where do you buy your floppy drives? Jackoffs Local Computer Mart?

Six of eight local stores charge $30+ tax, The other two had them for $25 but they are both not close to me and I would have to spend at least $5 in gas. Thanks for the offer. I will just go borrow one if I can not do this without one.

As I pointed out before floppy's are unreliable media, at least for me they have been. Why do programers still insist on making us use them? At the very least they could offer an option for a bootable CD instead. CD's are also cheaper than Floppy's.

<butting in here a bit>

CDs are only cheaper per megabyte. You can get 300 floppies for free ($5 before instant rebate -- but the rebate is instant, so you actually only ever part with the tax on the $5) quite often at a lot of local stores around where I am from. But if you count price per megabyte, then yes, CDs are cheaper.

<back to the discussion at hand>

I know in Linux that you need to make an El Torito filesystem on the CD to make it bootable. (See the Linux HQ CDWriting How-To page, section Supported "Features" (http://www.linuxhq.com/ldp/howto/CD-Writing-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.6) ). Then the first 1440 kilobytes of the CD is just the image of a bootdisk. I would assume that the filesystem on the CD is the same under Windows, but I'm not sure how to make PC CD writing programs burn that filesystem.

I hope this at least gives you something to go on.

I am happy YOU can find that deal but here a 100 pack of floppy's goes for around $25 or more. I can get a 100 pack of CDR's for $20 when on sale and $25-30 when not on sale.

I did not start this thread so people can tell me I need a floppy drive or how cheap they can get the media or drives.

Thanks for helping Dave_H. If someone can provide me with an image of the Ghost floppy's I would appreiate it.

first make a "cd" bootable floppy in the nortons ghost program, its called nortons boot wizard. in the parameters you should specify how big the partion and destition. someting like -clone,mode=load, src=c:\nameoffile.gho,dst=1.sze1=8000m. replace the 8000m with whatever partion size you want. next boot with the floppy you made. before you clone the disk it should ask you somewhere if you want to make this cd bootable SAY YES. the rest your going to have to do yourself like i did. nortons doesnt offer much support unless you pay for it. cheapskate norton. somewhere inthe process your going to need a floppy drive just buy one, their cheap enuff.
