How often do you run these, I read somewhere that it should be done once a week. Is that true and does it really make a difference?

Is that true and does it really make a difference? Shnikey Target 06-20-2000, 02:20 PM It sort of depends on how you use your computer.... Lots of new files, deletion of old ones, installs, de-installs, etc etc all effect the frequency with which you should run these utilities. For some people, once a week is needed, others seem to be able to go for a couple months without needing a defrag. Personally, I do them about once every two weeks (give or take a week) depending on what I have done and how my machine is running. qball 06-20-2000, 03:12 PM There is no right or wrong on this. I know, I have a drive partition that has never been scanned or defrag in its two year existence and I use it quite often (iffin you're curious, scandisk and defrag won't run). Anyway, dependent upon how much the drive is used and how often. You should try to run a scan and defrag at least once a year. Here's the kicker, scandisk run anytime. Defrag should be done in safe mode with NO winders swap file. Post in tech support iffin you need explicit direction to run defrag in safe mode wif no swp file. wyvrn 06-20-2000, 04:02 PM Also run the System File Checker to get rid of changed/corrupted/missing system files. Those three utilities I consider the most important on my system for stability. shnikey 06-20-2000, 04:11 PM Where is the System File Checker? Shnikey Ygor 06-20-2000, 05:32 PM We scan & defrag once a week, haven't tried it in Safe mode yet, haven't found any reason to. It's a good idea to shut down anything in the Systray when you do this. Win98 gives the option to scan & defrag all drives in the Maintenance Wizard. Sfc is used in the "Run" box. Click start, select Run & type in sfc, click OK. shnikey 06-20-2000, 06:40 PM Thanks guys. Shnikey john robbinson 06-22-2000, 12:17 AM hey QBALL please tell! ive tryed and tryed and it keeps telling me it has to run in widows. can get scandisk to work. SysOpt.com
