Hey guys,
a friend of mine had win95 on flop, but they are defect now.
He asked me if it were possible for someone to take a win95 cd, and make those same kinda floppies he used to have.
So, my question is, can it be done, and if so, how??
Thanks in advance

Winrar breaks down huge programs into smaller ones. the only prob is that i don't know how that would afect setup and that would be alot of disks. how many did it use by the way??

Here's another related thread, there isn't a definitive answer given, but apparently it can be done.

I'm sure you could make a backup set on floppies (WinRAR, WinZip, MS Backup etc.)that you could first copy into a directory on the hard drive, then install Window95 from there, but I'm not sure if, or how you could install it directly from the floppies. I would think the "setup.exe" program on the floppy version would be slightly different than the one on the CD version, but I'm just guessing.

No, you cannot create a floppy installation set from the CD. They are different SKU's.

You can mail in those Disks with MS and they should give you new ones!! (or at least the Cd version)

The problem is, without the original master file they copied everything from, how would you go about transfering the Win95 CD version to a machine using floppies? Actually being able to run setup from floppies without this master file would be a problem. I'm in the process of testing an idea whereby you zip the CD into one large file and then use a spliter utility which will split that large file into as many as 99 1.44 MB pieces. Of course, you will have to do everything in DOS until you can re-build the Win95 CD directory again at the root of c: or what ever and then run setup from there. Of course, like the other guy said, you can copy the CD to the hdd right off but I figured the CD-ROM was the probelm anyway.

Win95B CD-ROM = 596 MB
Win95B CD-ROM in ZIP form = 437 MB. That's 315 floppies! Are you sure you really want to go through that much pain? LOL http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I made a set of floppies with win95. In the Win95 folder copy all the loose files onto floppies and then using File Shredder chop up all the .cab files so they will fit onto floppies also. You don't need anything thats not in this folder. I got Windows 95A onto about 25 disks. To use just copy all floppies to the HD and run the .bat files to reassemble the split .cab files. Then run setup.exe and PRESTO !

The win95 installation comes on 14 floppies (this is the upgrade from win3.11). You probably wouldn't need everything on the cd-rom. Half of it is probably junk like fancy wallpapers anyway. Also, there are probably a bunch of working sets of win95 intstall floppies for sale on ebay for next to nothing right now...
