Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me with this one... This man I work with claims this problem started when Norton SystemWorks was installed... When he opens up Windows Explorer, and I believe other applications, the A drive starts lighting up and searches for something in there, when there's nothing there... Norton was uninstalled and reinstalled. What could be making the computer search for something in the A drive all the time? Thanks...

When you open up an explorer window it will want to "prefetch" the info that is in the drives. (ie what folders ect) so it will hit the A drive as it will be wanting to check to see if there is any virus's on that disk.

So, is there anyway for it to not check the drive?

For System Works 2000, this would be what to do. Open System Works, click the button "options" and select Norton Anti-virus. On the left, go to auto protect/advanced, then on the right side clear the two boxes under "floppy disk scans"
Hope that helps. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Kristen, my wife was being driven bananas by the same problem. In addition, every 15 mintes or so the A drive would be searched. This would cause her computer to pause for a couple of seconds when a couple of seconds really mattered playing a particular online game. You may be able (and it may be more prudent) to do this in Bios, if you can disable the A drive. My wife MAYBE utilizes that drive once every two months. I chose to go into Device Manager (Win98se) and disable the floppy there. I know there may be concerns with a crash and needing to use the A drive for a boot disk, but her's is more a toy than a tool she must depend on daily, and I'll cross that bridge should or if I need to.

Some / many of our fellow members may think this is terrible advice, and they may be right but it works for my wife.

Good luck!

Had a similar problem on a guy's computer. He asked me to back up some email to floppy for him and all of a sudden every time I rebooted or opened certain apps, the fdd would get searched. I found that by deleting the recent document list with TweakUI, solved the problem. It was just looking for the files that were on floppy.
