Well, I don't need much, just something in the "bang for the buck" ink-jet department. I mostly print schoolwork, which is mainly text, but I want good quality picture printing also. Any suggestions?

I recently bought the canon bjc 2000.

It is very cheap in comparison to HP printers and it does the job good!!!
Although the 3000 is better.

It is up to you buddy!!

I just picked up a couple of HP 970Cse printers about 2 months ago. They're not cheap, but they're the best qulatiy, fastest printing ink jets I've ever used!

The 970Cse gets 4.75 out of 5 stars from me!!!

The Lexmark 1100 (which I own, comes with a free color cartridge) is currently on sale (I forget where) for $20.00 after rebate.

Well, I've narrowed it down a bit between an HP or Lexmark. My printer started working again today, so I may be able to put this off for a couple more days while I ponder. I'm using an HP693c (color) that's around 3 yrs old now and it's always been reliable - no problems. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm pretty happy with how long it's lasted and it's still printing b&w and color just fine for my home usage.

I just ordered a NEC 750C from overstock.com. It is a refurb, but had pretty good reviews. Thanks to some links from this forum, I took advantage of a coupon from techbargains.com and got $20 off. Total cost shipped....$39!

Good luck!

(btw this is my first post ever)

Would have to say my epson photo printer. A few years old (model 700) but I love it! Not that great with text, still use my HP 540 for resumes!. If Epson has improved the text quality in addition to the photo printing, Epson would be my choice.

If you think that you ever may need to network this printer, do not buy HP, they're a ***** to network.

EPSON 660 I just bought at OM for 50 bucks after rebate. It is soooo nice for the buck. EPSON or HP is your most viable options but I like EPSON just a little better. Go to Best Buy and waste there paper on samples. Even though they are all set to print whatever the maufacturer thinks will sell the printer, you can still get an idea for speed and quality. Did I say I liked EPSON? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

you will find the lexmark ink expensive as well as harder to find..epson or HP are reliable printers and deliver all the quality you could want

Avoid the canon bjc-240, and don't worry about cartrige prices, just refuill them yourself.

Good idea on the wasting Best Buy's paper. I think I'll do just that... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I know you said you want an inkjet, but give laser some consideration.
After a couple bad experiences, most notably a Canon, I realized it's more cost effective to keep an ink jet just for color, and use a laser for the rest, which is about 95% of my printing.
My HP LaserJet 6L is still on it's original toner cartridge after 1.5 years. In that time I would have used at least $150 worth of ink carts, not to mention the aggravation that goes with ink printers.
This thing does exactly what I think a printer should. Sits there and does it's job trouble-free without annoying me. And the output is GREAT!

Whatever you do, I've got to agree with dementeddevil about Canon. Had lots of hassles with mine. Out of four people I know locally who own Canon, three have sworn to never purchase another of their products!

Have to agree that laser is great but do they do color?

I've seen the HP 600/700 series for dirt cheap lately. I have a 712 and am very pleased with it.

3 reasons not to get an Epson:
They are very noisy.
The print cartridges don't last that long.
The print head (more expensive than the printer if purchased separately) is built into the printer and can clog up or malfunction.
My HP812C:
Is far Quieter than my (now broken) Epson 600.
Has large print cartridges that last and last - like twice as long as my (too expensive to repair) Epson's cartridges.
Has print heads that are integrated into the ink cartridges so that they are renewed each time the ink is changed (unlike my Epson 600 with a print head that costs $146).
Note: Epson 400 - 700 series all use the same type print head. These print heads can become clogged by the cheap felt used in after-market ink cartridges (it sheds), and refill ink can cause dammage to print head as well exasorbating the deterioration of the felt.

The photo quality of Epson does seem slightly better when compared with the low cost HP Deskjet models, but there is less difference with the high-end models.

For my money it's going to be HP printers from now on.

Finally, if you are ever considering Linux operating system, check for support before you buy - not all HPs are supported in Linux (the one drawback of my HP812C)

I think it's going to be an HP. Of all the replies, the pro-HP crowd is larger than anything else. I considerd a Canon for a short while, (about 5 minutes) and a Lexmark (for about 10 minutes). HP seems to be the best for the money interms of price and reliability. Thanks for all of the suggestions!1!!!!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
