I am upgrading my W2K Prof. computer from an K6-2 550 to a Thunderbird system. Will Win2K balk right off the bat (since I am changing motherboards) causing me to have to reload, or can I be proactive in this swap-out and avoid problems?

It is always wise to back up your essential data, and then I would suggest to go head and swap the system. I did it with my system. Though I stayed with SS7 plateform, changed the motherboard. No problems, the win2k detected new settings and installed everything, reboot and system was up and running.

One thing I've learned in doing things like this in Win2k is you might need to re-boot a few times as it boots up ( the final progress bar ) I've had it just sit there for a long time , and I just re-boot again , I don't know why yet.

w2k handles hardware changes much better than win9x, but be cautious and before you make the switch uninstall all the hardware from w2k device manager, then let it reinstall in new MB. The only major problem that's likely to arise would be if you're using ACPI kernel and the new MB is not ACPI compliant, but since it's presumably a newer MB that problem's not likely to arise - should it be the case, however, you'd have to do a reinstall to Standard PC kernel (or SMP if it's a dual cpu setup).

Thanks guys, I tried it today, but all I get after the initial splash screen is a STOP error, Inaccessible boot device. Any suggestions?
