Does anyone know how to dual boot the two without damaging the MBR?

That depends on which bootloader you want to use. If the Linux bootloader LILO, install NT first, Linux second. Install LILO in the MBR and it'll boot NT from the LILO prompt when you type DOS and hit enter.

If you want to use the NT bootloader I think you need to install LILO in the first Linux partition and modify NT's boot.ini file to point to Linux.

I've always used LILO in the MBR but then I use Win98 and if something goes wrong I can fdisk /MBR to restore the MBR.

Either way NT goes on first.

Yes-I am dual booting Win2k/Linux(Caldera2.4). I installed Win2k first and installed LILO in the Mbr. At startup Linux's bootloader gives a nice GUI interface for me to choose which system to boot to. They work fine on the same system.

I would recommend using Partition Magic 6. Yes, it is a little costly, but it will make dual boot a snap. I ran the software, and just popped in LINUX 7. (RedHat). Everything installed so well that I thought I was dreaming. See, I had tried to use FIPS before, and ended up losing everything.

Good luck to you.

Did either of you have to do anything special to install it with NT?

I found this on the Slackware site while preparing for my install of Slack.

Dual Booting (http://www.slackware.com/book/index.php?source=x1776.html) .

Skip down to the NT part.

Nice link, Tiger. I wrote a "How-To" for NT-Linux dual booting, about 2 years ago. It basically does the same thing as your Slack link. This method uses the NT bootloader, rather than lilo. It also works with W2K.
