For the best results do a "clean" install by reformatting your HD and installing Windows from scratch.

Just assemble all of the software media you plan to reinstall in one place beforehand and make sure you have all serial numbers and ID information that those programs require.
You should save your browser address book and bookmarks to external disk so that you will have them available for reinstallation.

My own advice on this is that if you are going to do a clean install and have an internal network card, take all PCI cards out except the network card and install Windows with a minimum of hardware initially.
This will let the network card get its own IRQ and prevent conflicts with other hardware.

Once you have Windows reinstalled you can reinstall any other PCI cards and let Windows detect them and assign IRQs without running into IRQ conflicts.

You might look into using a disk imaging program such as Drive Image http://www.powerquest.com/ to give you an alternative to a Windows reinstall.
I used the program ro make a disk image of a clean Windows install and copied the image to a CD-R, so that if I ever need to do a clean install all I have to do is run Drive Image from DOS after an HD reformat and copy the disk image back into the C partition... presto- pristine Windows install... you can do the same thing if you want to put in a new HD or to keep an image of your current Windows partition for reinstall in case Windows crashes. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Reformatting the Hard Drive will ERASE all data on it, so if there is anything you want to save like address books, pictures, sounds etc.... back them up first.

To reformat your drive:

Put your Windows startup floppy in the drive and start the computer.
** If you don't have a startup floppy, you can make one by going to Start>Setting>Control Panel and double click on the Add/Remove Programs icn. Click on the Startup disk tab and hit the Create Startuo Disk button. You will need one blank floppy disk.
After the computer starts (let it boot with CD ROM support) and comes to the A: prompt, type in: FORMAT C: /s
Use the spaces. it will give you a warning about losing all your data and ask if you want to continue. Answer Y. When it finishes formatting it will ask for a volume label or Enter for none. I usually just hit Enter. Now the Hard drive is ready for the Windows installation. Just put your Windows CD in and type: E: then hit Enter, then type: SETUP then hit Enter and your'e on your way.

As for your second question: if you are a real novice o this stuff, just leave all your hardware in the computer, don't take anything out.
