Snuffy!

Where I live in a semi-rural place in Western Australia, we have bodgy old phone lines, and there is no way in hell we are ever gonna get decent enough lines for cable. The only fast connection I could get, is if I paid about 10 trillion dollars for a 128kb Satelite connection. Do you guys in America all have good phone lines which u can get cable access on? Is cable cheap in America? How many of you have cable? I just hate going into Quake3 games on the net, and see people with pings of about 40, going aorund railing everyone, and i'm running around with a ping of about 400 trying to compensate for my latency http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Well snuffy, I have cable access here in Orrville, Ohio(500kbs @ $39/mo). Our town population is around 10,000 people maybe. My cable company is Armstrong, which is based out of PA, they ran all new fiber-optic line before they could make cable modem access available.
Cable does not use phone line, it is actually a channel on the cable TV line. DSL is not yet available in my area, so cable is the only high-speed option for now.
Toronto, Canada. I have access to both cable & adsl. The cable is delivered by the cable tv company and the adsl is delivered by the telephone company. I use cable because it is faster than the adsl. It is $39.95 CDN per month (about 35% less expensive than mgordon99 due to the us - cdn dollar conversion).

We have Cable here in Semi-rural GA thats about 300k, around 40 US dollars a month. We were paying 20 dollars a month for an ISP plus another 20 a month for a second phone line, so we went with the cable. I hope you do one day get in "down there."

I live in Leduc, Alberta, Canada (near Edmonton) and have access to both cable & ADSL. Cable is cheaper by far (39.95Cdn/mo)so that's what I use. Shaw cable provided the modem & NIC, and the hookup was also free. It also gives me 5 e-mail addresses with 10mb webspace assigned to each address...pretty good deal.

The cities' cable company also offers us cable access.

Cable here also. 500+kbps on a steady basis.
Actually some major cities do not have cable access yet because they still have to change over to fiber (Miami being an example). Yet many suburbs of large cities end up getting it because they are growing at a rapid rate and it is cheaper and easier for the cable companys to give them access first.

I'm in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and my wife and I currently share a cable modem. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif (We're paying for a single connection @ 39/month)
Btw.. I've seen some guys with pings of 400+ running around and winning Q3 matches over people with pings of 40.

Here in Fairbanks, Alaska if GCI is your long distance carrier, internet access by telephone (56k) is free. For cable customers it's 40 bucks for 256/64 or 50 bucks for 512/128. DSL is available in some areas.

here in houston texas...i can get whatever i want...currently use RR cable access from time warner (no caps...yet...appears to be about 6 megabits/s down at peak and 512k/s up at peak) and i pay $39 a month. Also have DSL (ADSL, IDSL, SDSL) available from anywhere from 144k/s and up to over 6 megabits/s from $40 a month and up, I also have looked into a T1 line as well, and that starts at about $800 a month plus installation...oh yeah and satellite systems are available as well as isdn...but i am happy with cable for now even with the crappy uploads...the best upload i have ever gotten was about 60 kilobytes/s, with bursts to 120kB/s...

I live in a tourist town of about 3,500 in Vermont. Pretty rural - gotta travel 20 minutes or so to get to any dept. store. We don't have cable but the local crappy cable company says they will do it next spring. Can't wait. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Although I live in Holland, and not the USA, I still have access to cable!!!
It is fairly fast, and has reasonably good d/l speeds, at a rated max of 300Kb/s, so they say!!!
Cause I also have downloaded patches from the Corel site, for updates on corel office 2000 and also from MS's site!!!
MS's site gave me a top d/l speed of 350/400Kb/s and that sure ain't that bad!!!
It ain't all that expensive, I guess around 40 USD, but that is cause it is also fairly new around here!!!
Cable internet has only been in Holland for about 2 years now and that ain't very long.
Haven't had any complaints about it yet, my pc is online all the time and hasn't been turned off for a little more then a month now!!
Internet never failed on me yet!!
Pim
