I am trying to gain some system resources back and am trying to prevent some programs from running in the background on startup. Ctrl-Alt-Del shows me several programs but I can't figure out what they are and what software they belong with, or even if they are necessary to be running at all times. How would I find out what the jibberish means?
Thanks!

go to the run command in the start menue and then to "run" type "msconfig" click on the startup tab on the right. un check programs you do not want to run. some programs need to run such as scan registry and system tray

How would I find out what those programs are, such as AtiKey and LVComs, etc? I'm not sure which ones to disable and which ones, such as Scan Registry, need to be on to run properly.

hey DeniseR
http://www.blumentals.net/ is a link to ProcView32; a program that will give you a lot of information about what is running and the respective resource usage. It even has the ability to terminate a process.

DeniseR: running "msconfig" is the best way to determine what programs are loading at startup as "e980238" has stated, although "systray" is only needed to enable the system speaker, to the best of my knowledge. also if you really want to track the programs down the hard way. then use ctrl, alt, del, and then note those programs that are running and then enter (one at a time) them into the "start , find, files or folders area and that will show you exactly where they are, by clicking on each file there and then properties it will show you the command line for that file. there are also some registry tricks you could do but I really don't think they are necessary.

Here is a site that may help. It has a pretty good list of some of the most common startup items, although the two you listed are not there, it may help with some of the others.

lvcoms is for your Logitech Visual or Virtual Communications. I take it you have a Logitech Cam on your computer. You can remove this from your startup if you like as it will load when you access your Quick Cam program. It is a resourse waster if not being used.
ATIkey I believe is for your ATI card. I can't remember what I did with this one on my friends computer. You can use the trial and error method of removing this one and see if it creates and adverse affect on your machine. You can always change it back. If you have several items in your Startup that are mysticle, remove them one by one, each time re-booting to see if you get a problem. Looking to the right of each item will sometimes give you a clue of its nature by which program it is assosiated with.
Cheers!
