Maxtor should be sending me my hd back any day now. But I want to put it in my 5 1/2 bay so it's more secure. The only available slot is inbetween my exhaust fan and cd-r, or on top of it. So It won't have much space to breathe.
Someone at work told me hd fans are a waste of money and they may get ot but not hot enought to damage itself. It's a 7200 RPM drive btw if that matters here or not.
So shoucl I get it or forget it?

They are not really worth it, harddrives a really tough peices of machinery...
But it all depends on what your doing, like leaving it on all the time without puting it in sleep mode can make it pretty hot.....
But I never had a hardrive fail under any circumstance, so they are kinda of a luxury, but if you can get one for cheap, it can only benefit it....
I got one, but it's kinda loud, so if you don't like the sound of fans, you should probably go without.....

From what I have read a 7,200 RPM hdd should have some type of cooling.
I forget where I read it though.
Hi
For sure, HD coolers will extend the HD life.
There is another reason why I have HD cooler for each of my HD: it is cooler inside the PC case as well !
Also, 7200rpm HD are running pretty hot, so I would always recommend the use of a HD cooler.

High speed, (7200, 10000RPM) drives require extra cooling. There is no argument here; look at the specs for the amount of heat radiated by these guys vs. ordinary drives. Without provisions of some kind, Seagate Barracudas get so hot they will burn you. I had the motor in one turn to charcoal when a cooling fan failed.

I've just got a 2-fan "Just Cooler" sitting in front of my HDD, and it runs a lot cooler.
Don't really know if it needs it or not, but it seems logical to assume that it is doing some good. IMO it's cheap insurance at 15.00 bucks.

Ok I think I'll get one then. I need a new system fan anyway so I might as well get both.
And to Stan www.3dfxcool.com (http://www.3dfxcool.com) sells the exact same 'ultimate hd cooler' for $8 cheaper

I have two HDD's, mounted one above the other.
One is a seagate medalist 9.1, and the other an IBM 13.1.
They got about as hot as a cental heating radiator, IMHO WAY TOO hot, I stipped a fan off an old hs and bluetacked it to the front, drives are just warm now.
Cooling is easy and might lengthen the life.

I have them for my 7,200 rpm drives. These do run hotter and as m1 stated, its cheap insurance!
