ok, here is the problem. i cold boot my computer, and win2k starts up. i get past the first splash screen, and at the point where the desktop background color comes up (before the login or "setting up network connections") it hangs. the mouse pointer is not visible - all i have is a blue screen (the color of my desktop) and thats it. ive left it sit there for an hour, and nothing ever happens. however, if i hit the reset button on my comp, it will reboot, and win2k will start just fine. this problem happens 100% of the time, and when i hit the reset button, it loads into win2k successfully 100% of the time.
i am not dual booting. i have a p3 500 o/c to 560 on a abit bh6 mobo with 196 megs of ram, nvidia tnt2 vid card, soundblaster live soundcard, ibm 13 gig drive ata66 connected to a pci ata66 controller card.
can someone please give me some suggestions?
thanks
Hello,
It looks to me that it hangs when it transit form standard VGA mode (initialisation) to your local display/card settings.
Try to play with settings and/or reinstall drivers.
Hope it helps.

The thing is, what does the reset button do that a cold boot doesn't? Possibly a BIOS setting? They're obviously not the same. I don't think it's a Windows problem or it wouldn't matter. Windows doesn't know or care if it's a cold boot or a reset as this appears to happen before Windows is loaded. Is this something new, or has it allways been doing it. Play around in the BIOS (carefully)and see what you can come up with. Just a guess here. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Good Luck!
Hello,
You might have a point with your answer pcdad.
The reason why I suggested the solution above is based on my experience with NT and similar problems. NT and w2K do not respect all bios settings. In any case it is a problem, probably related with the video card.
Hope it helps.

What video card and driver are you using? I've had the same exact problem, but was solved....

I had the same problem using the nvidia video card.
Switched to an asus card and the problem went away. I have noticed a problem with getting drivers for win 2K but most of them can be solved.
Good luck!

Let me guess, you weren't using Detonator 3 with your Nvidia card were you?
