Hi All http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
If you see I am all over sysopt I am sorry but you guys and gals are the best help I can fine on this net thing.
I am getting together a PC I want to use for linux and probably as a dual boot system, not so much for games. so I am looking at video cards locally and have available 3 of the 8 mg version.
Rage IIc
Xpert 98
Trident 9880
would one of these be better then the other for linux?
Thanks

I'm no big expert on Linux, I do use it some and have loaded a few machines. I know it will see the Trident card with no problem, I've got six of them at work.

All of those cards will work fine under Linux. I believe the Expert 98 is the best of the bunch overall. I used that card under Linux in the past.

The ATI "Xpert98" will give the best performance in Windows and Linux - run like the wind away from that Trident card!
Be sure to use one of the latest versions of Linux. I highly recommend Mandrake 7.2 for someone new to Linux. Mandrake 7.2 will give you the best hardware support and CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) that will provide print services to almost any printer - something Linux has previously been pretty poor at. It may not be photo quality on some printers but it sure beats printing pages of garbage.

You could use at the same time 2 video cards, having both working in X-Windows. I'm pretty sure that the ATI, Matrox, some S3 works in Win98 in packs (I installed 2 of them in a system, and they worked instantly). So you could try to put 2 video cards and 2 monitors. In Win98 enabling them is one click away, and it in Linux is possible too.
