Bleeding Edge

She's going to be reaching the apex of a turning point in her profession in a couple weeks. She is very stressed out right now, trying to complete all the data to present a important talk. She'll also be meeting big-name scientists and is concerned about making a good impression. She's at the point where (many of us may have been or will be) she is beginning to second guess her efforts and doubting her faith in her work.

I can't tell you much in anymore detail, but I'd think, whether she comes across this post are not, and, whether you know her or not, a voice of encourgement from you will make all the difference.

Jeana,
I know you will do great on your defense and with your thesis. Many work long and hard to get to this point and most I have worked with (yeah there are only a few but wait...) have had doubts as well. I wish you the best of luck. Stay focused and know your data/ research, as well as I am sure you do. Best of luck and I hope you knock'em dead. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Best of luck
Dave

Good luck!
Remember:
1) Good eye contact
2) Talk assertively
3) Vary your voice tone
4) Whether you're standing or sitting, keep your hands in front of you, and visible.
5) Don't put your hands in front of your face.
6) Relax!

I'm sure you'll do well. Be stong, be proud, have faith.

You'll do great because you have to and you have to, only because of you. Be proud of yourself.

Jeana, from your past postings you're obviously quite an intelligent person. Take some deep breaths and give 'em what you've got!

Picturing those scientists in their undies while you're talking to them wouldn't hurt either (just don't giggle... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif )

You'll do great. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Jeana, from our discussions on this BBS, I have come to know you as a very intelligent person with a very objective personality. Someday, I hope to meet you, but that is beside the point. I know that you will succeed in whatever you do. Good luck Jeana!

Doubting is part of learning. It is a poor academic that takes everything at face value.
Just remember that the harshest critic of your work will always be yourself http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Knock 'em dead!

Now I know why she didn't pass me in RC5 like I thought she would. Good luck Jeana and when the dust settles, let us know what your thesis is.

Remember that in academia being right is not as important as your abiliity to argue your point. Think about how pig headed your department chair can be - and with that in mind relax and forget all I just said.

Also lean forward slightly when talking to them about details - this will convey focus and determination more than leaning slightly backwards (hinting of slouching).

Confidence comes with knowledge - you know your thesis better than anyone.

Jeana,

"It is better to do something and fail in the deed than try to do nothing and always succeed."

I heard those words over and over and over from my infancy to my adolesence from a dear great-aunt...and they stuck!

Best wishes in your endeavors and I'm sure the results will reflect the amount of effort and time that you've put into your work.

I will not say "Good Luck", because luck won't have a thing to do with your eventual success. Just your hard work and intelligence!!

Go get 'em...

You guys!!!! Wow, I'm really touched. Bleeding Edge, you da MAN! Everyone who's spent any time on this board at all knows he's a guru supreme and a real sweet guy, but I'd like to register this statement formally.

Sorry I didn't see this before... as you can see I'm not able to stop by every day like before. Yeah, I have one week left and I am sunk, destroyed, and in major deep doo-doo. It's not my defense-- just a minor paper but the first time that I'll be presenting to huge numbers of people I've never met before.

I guess rather than "the apex" of my career as B.E. kindly put it, I'm worried it will be a big pit that I'll have to spend a few years climbing out of, once I fall in. The last time I gave a departmental talk I was still in the copyroom making transparencies 3 minutes AFTER I was supposed to start talking. Everyone present was traumatized. This must not happen next week or else I'm going to have to find another source of funding for the rest of my doctorate. Eeeyugh.

Hee hee! Szech, I'll try to keep from jingling the change in my pockets... and is it okay to put my hands in front of my face if I'm curled up in a little ball under the lectern? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif I might have to cover my eyes if I imagine all the scientists in their underwear... or without!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Thank you for the advice and support everyone.

Love,
Jeana

Just be organized, prepared, and practiced and you'll do just fine, because you can be standing up there knowing that you are the most knowledgeable person in the room on that topic at that moment.

Plus, keep in mind that if it's a roomful of scientists, they're all thinking about something else while you're talking anyway! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
