I had a problem ordering a hard drive last night. If you want to help me, cool!, please read on. . .

For the records, I ordered an IBM Deskstar 12.9gb 7200 udma/66 compliant hard drive a few weeks ago. I had heard good things about this drive and thought that this was the best drive for me. I ordered from globalmicro.com and they never shipped it out and I got no email notification. I called them last night inquiring where it was and the sales rep told me it was first on backorder. He said that that particular model was beeing phased out and they didn't have any, and they wouldn't be getting any more. He then went on to offer me a better deal. He offered a Quantum 18gb 7200, udma/66, hard drive for the same price ($130). I don't know if Quantum's are good hard drives so I turned him down for the moment. Can anybody help me with this little dilemma? Thanks!

I narrowed it down to two choices:
(a) Cancel the order and get it from company that has it in stock.
(b) If possible, get the bigger drive

I don't know about Quantum drives, so "b" if kinda iffy.

I don't think the price is the best deal considering the circumstances.
Here is an example. BOth are Quantam drives.

18.2GB UDMA KA QM318200KA 8.5ms 512K/7200 $129

20.5GB DMA66 KX20.5 8.5ms 512K/7200 $134

These prices are from http://www.componentsdirect.com/home.htm

I think they should give you a much better price since they can not get you what you ordered. I would ask them to sell it to me @ $100 or so. I got a Maxtor 30.2GB ATA66 5307306 8.6ms 2MB/7200 $199 (price from the above site) for $129+tax from Staples because they advertised a 20 gig drive at that price and it was out of stock.

Maybe call and ask them what IBM drives they do have in stock (acting as another customer) then tell them you want that one at the same cost.

Sounds like bait-and-switch to me!

I would simply ask for a refund and go to another vendor and buy the drive you wanted in the first place. Even if the the same drive costs you $10-30 more elsewhere, you can chock up the difference to learning.

A vendor that changes stories like that can't be trusted...I wouldn't trust the alternative drive that I got from them, no matter what kind of refund/replacement policy that they had.

Good luck...

Here's what i got from a local shop

Quantum Fireball CX20.4GB(CX20A011) for $245.00

Quantum Fireball CX10.2 CX10A011 for $136

how about a maxtor...
Maxtor Diamondmax 20.4gb - $220
diamondmax 27.2gb - 270

i've tried out several maxtors, never had a problem since. i still have my maxtor 500mb and my quantum 800mb working perfectly well after years of service.

it's your choice...

but it seems its a lot cheaper on your end. we have to order maxtor and quantum drives here. but seagate 20gb drives cost cheaper here, about $120.

even though I have had good experiences with Quantum drives, I would go for what you originally wanted because, well, its what you wanted. I am sure you will be able to track the drive down somewhere else.

I have a 30g Quantum Fireball which Dell supplied free after my Maxtor 17.2.g failed and am really happy with it.
Happy shopping

I'd go with the Quantum. They're good hard drives, and you're getting a lot of extra storage for the same price. If you don't want to do that, then I'd push them for whatever is replacing that model that's being
dropped.

Thanks for the information everybody. Can any Quantum owners tell me how quiet their drives are?? Thanks again! Oh, and do you really think I'd have success in bargaining for the newer IBM deskstar model at the same price?
