My buddy and I have this debate which has been going on for a few months. I told him about smartdrv speeding up the file copy process for the NT or 2000 install. He says it is not worth it. He also says that 2k only prompts for smartdrv if you are upgrading, not if you are installing fresh.
All I ask is that you post your honest opinion and any facts you may have about smartdrv so I can point him to the post.

smartdrv DOES speed up the copying process, i use it all the time with Win95 and Win98. and Win2k DOES prompt for smartdrv if you are doing a clean install, i just installed it yseterday.

I don't know about 2k, b/c I don't remember whether or not it used it, but for sure 98 automatically uses it if it's not already loaded, and it does very much indeed without a doubt speed up installation.
NT by default does NOT use smartdrv so you'd better run it yourself or you'll be sitting around.
//edit: ques...
I don't understand how it could possibly hurt either. 640k is waaaay more than enough to do a simple file copy. As long as you have a spare 4MB of RAM you might as well write-cache your disk.
Put all his doubts to rest and benchmark it.

welll, if you do Win98 installs without using Smartdrv, you don't notice a diff, but if you do W2K without it, the file copy part will take an hour or so, and if you use it, only a few minutes...
You can show him that.
