Do you think there will ever be an OS that will run completely by voice, if so, what would have to change about current OS's to impliment this technology?

You wouldn't have to change a whole lot with windows. I have already used a microphone/program setup that can "in theory" controll almost all the functions in windows. This would just take a long time to setup and your voice would be very sore after. You have to record at least 3 samples of you saying each word for it to recognize it, and even then it doesn't work half the time. Voice recognition has a ways to go before it works flawlessly. You pretty much have to say everything in a monotone voice and exactly the way you said it when you recorded it. It was fun for a couple hours, but then just got to be a pain in the *****.

IBM attempted integrated voice recognition with OS/2 Warp Ver. 4.0. While it did work quite well considering when Warp 4 was released, the results were often less than pleasing.

Microsoft is currently working on a similar project. They hope to have speech recognition embedded at the OS level within the next few years. I still see concept as trival, similar aftermarket products have only been succesful in niche markets.

I agree with Rob, very useful for certain markets, such as people with motor disabilities or amputations, and for environments where regular input devices can't be used, e.g. combat, nuclear reactors, operating theatres, etc. Heck, even games http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

On the other hand, I can't see it being rolled out in open plan offices just yet http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

haha that would be funny. Everyone would be talking to their comp. VERY noisy and confusing.

Besides, I go faster with my mouse than I can talk. UNLESS it could do shortcuts. ex: "Shutdown computer". If it could do that without going through the menus, that would be faster.

gateway has been selling computers for the quadriplegic for quite some time now and have done quite a nice job...I have a friend that bought one of the first attempts at this and while it had some bugs still to be worked out it worked remarkably well and gateway donated it to him and continue to work with him to perfect it for him and others that are handicapped.
