A friend of mine is purchasing 64megs of PC100. He wants to know what brand/part#/etc. he should get. He was looking at micron, but they had 8 different 64meg PC100 types to order. Which one should he get? or should he buy Corsair? Viking?

He has an FIC 503+ v1.2a with an AMD k6-2 (300) the 100MHz version. A PCI C/L Banshee, 8.4 gig IBM deskstar. What memory is best for him?

He'll need to use three criteria. First, what does his mobo maker recomend? Second, which FSB is he using? Third, what can he afford?

The mobo maker tells you if you need ECC RAM, parity RAM, 72 pin, 168 pin, etc.

Next, if he's running at a FSB of 100 mhz, then he should get PC100 sticks at the least. FSB narrows down the field a bit more for you. Match it or better it.

Then you can answer the last portion. Get whatever he can afford that meets both the above criteria.

That's it, you're done http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Premium PC100 SDRAM is rated CAS Latency 2. It is likely to run at 133MHz. Don't be fooled by nanosecond numbers. Vendors use them without knowing what they mean. Brand names cost more, you pay for their advertising and integrity and more.

I likc to shop at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)

Roy. You still here?

I'm considering purchasing a single 128MB PC133 module or one 128MB and one 64MB PC100. There is a negligible price difference between two choices. They're all Corsairs. The later choice is the cas2 bx-2 module. I aware of the standards issue. I was thinking the 133 could be reused later this autumn with a Camino board. I wanted to click my FSB a little higher now. The 128 module I have now won't go above 103.

I've always bought Kingston but will give Corsair a try this time around. I read good things about their CAS2 BX-2 modules.

scourge, If you deside on Corsair, go here http://www.corsairmicro.com/memory.htm and look at the Cas 2 memory. Click sales and you'll see about a dozen online retails recommended by Corsair. Widgets seems to have the cheapest price. Around $70 I think. PriceWatch will more than likely have someone selling for less.

I am familiar with this motherboard it will accept 4 72 pin EDO or FP RAM it also has 2 DIMM for SDRAM, it will take PC 66 or PC 100 168 pin SDRAM non parity, This board will allow you to use a 100 MHz FSB and still use 72 pin RAM or PC 66 by setting the Memory Bus to 66 MHz even while using a 100 MHz FSB but it will take a performance hit of about 2 or 3% which is not really noticable but I do not believe it allows you to use both the 72 pin slots and the 168 pin slots at the same time, what type of RAM does he have at the present? it will accept ECC RAM, total for this board is 512 MB of RAM. This board will accept most of what is out there right now, but it depends what is in the board right now

Bleeding Edge - I haven't researched the PC133 thoroughly yet. I would hope to do the same with it as I did with the PC100 last Fall. That is, I determined my best choice would be CAS Latency 2 sticks. They turned out to test at 133, so I will be able to use them when I get a P3-600. Soon enough thereafter I'll have to get some similarly advanced PC133 so I can OC the 600 at the BX6-2's 153 FSB. Then I'll be maxed by the board and have to replace that.

Doing things this way gives me some slack to determine what to get next. For instance, DDR and RAMBUS will have settled down and one of them is likely to be a more forward looking choice than premium PC133 at that time.

Right now, Premium PC133 - probably CL2 @ 133 - would be a way to keep a future door open.

Will look into avilability of CAS2 PC133s. Corsair's 133s are CAS3.
