Is there a way to make Win2K NOT shutdown completely and show the screen where it says that it is safe to turn the computer off so that I can turn it off manually by using the button ob my PC case?

I checked in the registery to disable that option in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and noticed that it was already 0 on the PowerDownAfterShutdown value.

I was wondering this, because I'm kinda worried that Win2K may be shutting down before data is written back to disk. ANyone know if there is an issue of this sort?

Have you tried disabling ACPI in the BIOS?

Hello, socalgal! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

But wouldn't disabling the Write Cache heavily decrease system performance?

I'd say Isos has the right idea. Apparently it's an ATX PS/mobo? I'm outta my league here, but something w/the soft power button settings?

Hi NDC http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I was thinking "enabling".. but I really don't know; was stabbing in the dark. :/ Sorry.

What is making you think that some/all data is not being written to disk before shutdown? I don't notice a problem with my W2K.

Because I read in another forum here that there is an issue of this kind in Win ME. And another thing is that it shuts down so darn quick! LOL. I'm not used to this...... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, Isos is definetly on the right track, but I installed Win2K with the ACPI function enabled in the BIOS, and disabling that option doesn't allow me to get passed the hardware inspections screen, it will just reboot as soon as the hardware detection is completed. I also tried to alter the setting in the device manager for the ACPI settings but, no dice. I'm wondering if there may be a setting that I'm unaware of in the registery. Anyone have any ideas? Suggestion wil be much appreciated. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Trust me guys.... and gals. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I've tried just about everything I could to try disabling this shutdown option, but...... no go. My last bet is that this option may be somewhere in the registery settings.

That seems more like a BIOS than a Winders setting -- isn't Winders released by the time everything is shutdown? Here's my only shutdown setting in W95:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\contro l\Shutdown]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="16"
"original_FastReboot"="<nil>"
"FastReboot"="1"

Thanks, BFlurie & Socagal! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

But the registery setting you show above must only apply to Win95, not Win2000. There is no such registery key in Win2K registery settings.

BTW, Write Back Cache setting is enabled by default in Win2K. Enabled write back cache can cause the following:

NOTE: Enabling write caching generates the following warning. This is normal:
By enabling write caching, file system corruption and/or data loss could occur if the machine experiences a power, device or system failure and cannot be shutdown properly.

But it's a trade off for the significant performance gain.

Hey NDC,

I remember u helped me gave me the site for the registry to enable my power down. It's default is 0 right because mine was set to disable, i enabled it, and it still didn't power down, i went to the power options and enabled (checked off) the option for windows 2000 to used advanced power managment or something to that effect. Then it would power down. Whenever i don't want it to power down, i just uncheck this advanced power management option and it returns to the "it is now safe to shut down..." I don't know if that would help, but hope u find ur answer.
