Okay. The site is currently being hosted on one of the online presence providers. What do I need to do to get it moved onto my computer and have the DNS lookup changed and whatever else I may need to do?

I guess you need a static IP address from your ISP, and a HTTP server, like OminHTTPd like I have. And, if you own your own domain name, you need to contact your registrar and they should change the IP address for you.

OminHTTPd http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~glau/httpd/

If you are hosting the server on your personal computer, using OminHttp would be a bad idea, im assuming you have Win 98, NT 4.0 or Win 2k, the best thing to do would be to use the web servers that come built in with these operating systems.

For Win 98, its called personal web server, and can be set up using the windows CD.

For NT 4 or Win2k, you have MS Internet Information Server (IIS) 4 or 5 respectively.

If you have a Unix/Linux based system I would recoment Apache web server www.apache.org (http://www.apache.org)

You will need DNS servers.

2 of them.
http://www.granitecanyon.com do a free service.

Without 2 DNS servers pointing to your computer, you can't use your computer as the server.

Isn't it against most ISP's policies to run your own web server? I know I can't do it with my cable access provider unless I pay an ungodly amount of money. Is it different with DSL? Perhaps if you are not sharing bandwidth like cable?
