Okay, I have a 56k 3com US Robotics V.90 winmodem. I connect at speeds around 31200 bps, which isn't too bad I guess, but the fastest download I EVER had was at slightly less than 4k/sec! I didn't realise something was wrong until today, when I found out that downloads are supposed to go much faster on a 56k modem! What's wrong? Help!

what isp do you have? Unfortunately wth some, thats a normal download speed. on Aol and Bellsouth I had connections around 36k-53k and at most I would get about 5k for download. There area lot of factors that eat away at that precious bandwidth. Wats your isp? Do you have a Winmodem, or an actual real hardware modem?
it's ok, it depends mostly on your ISP and line noise. I DL around 4, or sometimes 3, i get 5 or 6 rarely. I use IB99. (internet boost 99). http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

This doubled my speed: http://www.hms.com/apps/ispeed.zip
4kps is about average. 56k modems vary extremely according to conditions of phone lines, servers, isp's, etc. They can range from 2k to 6k (The highest I have heard of)
Heres a cool page to find your tru modem speed: http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp

i wish i had those kinda downloads on my ole 56k, thank god for cable modem!!
uhm... i have a 56k, and in that test, it sed my line speed is 36.6kbps, but... hehe, for 36.6kbps, it's fast, because my DL speed is 4.5k bytes/s. that's cool!

just DLed Ispeed, now my line speed is 39.5 kilo bits per second, and 4.8 kilobytes per second. cool! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Remember that the connection may be 42,600 kbits /sec. This is different to the quoted D/L speed ~ 4 kbytes /sec.
Yep, I h8 dial-up connections too http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

4kb/s is the fastest I get with my 56k modem.
Glad I have cable in a couple of months.

Have a look at the above link. I suspect your phone lines are trash. My 56k Winmodem would not connect over 31200 and the highest throughput started out over 10k/bytes/sec and dropped rapidly to around 3 sometimes as low as 1. something. My inlaws Winmodem (cheaper)in a different neighourhood(1965)same dialup number connects consistently at 49333 and throughput above 5. A friend of mine in a different town, in a new neighbourhood( newer phone lines 1997 copper) with exactly the same modem but different ISP, gets above 49333 and above 7k/bytes/sec. Now I haven't run the 3com. test above recently, but when I did, it said my line would not support 56k. The funny thing now is that I connect consistently at 49333 and throughput averaging around 5k. So it looks like my telco has upgraded their switching station or done other work in the neighbourhood(1959) perhaps. PS: Welcome Aboard http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
