Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : How do you open registry in Win 98 jkittlesen 09-07-2000, 04:37 PM Thanks cyclone2 09-07-2000, 04:59 PM start/run type in regedit be careful in there, you could screw your system http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif qball 09-08-2000, 01:57 PM Try the 98 System configuration tool. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Config or something like that. I second cyclone, if you screw up your system, you can't get on line and have us help you out. Beemers 09-08-2000, 06:22 PM System Configuration Utility is accessed easily by Start, Run and type "msconfig" without the quotes. But what everyone is missing is that to learn your Regedit you learn a very powerful tool. If you must learn how to become a power user you might want a few tips and a little knowledge. Before you even venture a look into your registry the first thing you need to know is how to make a registry backup. It is a safety net for your screw ups. Go to my page: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9147/tippages/beemerswindowstips/registrybackup.htm to learn how this is performed. You will need to study a little about the achitecture of the registry so that it isn't all foreign to you. Here is a site that will help in this: http://www.regedit.com Regedit.com covers all the basics as well as the advanced information you will need. The registry is a place that you do not want to make any errors. If you are lucky, what ever you are trying just won't work. On the other side, what you tried made your machine inoperable. Here is a nifty little trick just incase you need it. Right it down. If your machine is screwed and all you can get into is a dos promp or screwed and you can't fix it any other way, then you can make your machine go back a day or 5 days. Windows 98 by default will create 5 backups. These backups are accessed by being in true dos and typing scanreg /restore. A screen will come up and you will see 4 of the dates I mentioned. Pick the date previous to the mishap. With your mouse or up and down keys select the date you wish to restore. Hit enter. This will put the system settings and everything that was, back into your machine. Another tip for the registry changes is to do one at a time and then you can see if it worked. If not, reverse your steps to see where you went wrong. If you do too many hacks at one time you loose your proccess of elimination. And another. Everything you type in the registry is case sensitive. If you are doing a hack from a web site and it says to make a string called "MaxCachedIcons" type it without the quotes, no spaces and capitalize the letters that are capitalized on the hack page. "max cached icons" will not give you the desired affect. Cheers and Good Luck! Hope to hear from you again. lol [This message has been edited by Beemers (edited 09-09-2000).] BFlurie 09-08-2000, 09:14 PM I agree, Beemers. There's absolutely no danger in simply running Regedit & looking at the registry -- just don't make any changes. It's really the only way to begin learning about it --- Beemers 09-14-2000, 06:42 AM So I wonder how jkittlesen made out with the registry? If you are still able to comment,j let us know. Buji 09-14-2000, 10:34 AM You guys forgot regedit or msconfig or others can also be run from the Address Bar. jkittlesen 09-14-2000, 04:34 PM Hey I made it after many Ati driver installs, removing all keys in Registry, and 2 clean installs of 98SE..I may have solved my lock-ups.Strange the mouse would slow down then I knew the system was about to lock-up hard, no c-a-delete would reset this system.I still feel this was an ATI driver issue(previous post)well thanks all I'll keep in touch.Going to buy Me now just hoping for more STABILITY! Beemers 09-14-2000, 07:33 PM So how do you like the registry? Buji 09-15-2000, 05:47 AM Hey Beemers are you sure about the NoNetHood hack on your site? I don't have that key listed in my Reg. Win98. Thanks. Beemers 09-16-2000, 07:58 AM Buji I'll start another thread for this in your honor. Cheers! SysOpt.com
