I am installing Win98 SE on ASUS P2B-F with BIOS version 1013, Celeron 400 not o/c, Image Accel 4 PCI card, NEC PC100 SDRAM, Maxtor UDMA33 8.4G drive. The problems I am experiencing are when you select Restart the system, Win 98 SE keeps saying that the system did not shut down properly and runs scandisk everytime. This happens when the OS is installing, and even after it is installed. I have installed the latest Bus Master drivers from Intel, and the latest drivers from the video card - but no effect.
An interesting note is that Win95 B does not have any problems at all. Any suggestions?

Don't know about your problem but if you don't wanna that message always nagging you can disable it: Start->Run->msconfig->Advanced->Disable Scandisk After bad shutdown.
try doing a reinstall of windows overtop of itself that may work

Thanks for the tips, but this occurs during the install of Win98 SE. The installation requires that the system be restarted twice and even these restarts cause Scandisk to run. Also, sometimes scanreg runs after a restart and says that the registry gets corrupted during the install.
Another interesting note is that this does not occur on a SOYO 6BA + III running the exact same components. Must be something with the ASUS mb?
Thanks.

You can always try and do a clean install. This means...for me at least..that you take out all the other components such as Zip Drives, CDRW's, etc.. Only leave in what you need to install windows. Take out modems and other such unused cards too. This might solve your problem. Hope you figure it out...

Thanks for the tip. All I had installed were the video card, and the obvious things like hard disk, cd rom, cpu, ram. I guess I'll have to try another OS besides Win98SE on the ASUS P2B-F.
you might want to try and reformt the drive and start all over again that will ge ride of anything that might be causing the problem

Believe it or not, W95 would probably install. Might also try W98 (original).

I used Maxtor's write test program, which is supposed to restore the drive to a factory fresh state and tried Win98 and I still have the problem with Win98 not being able to do a restart cleanly. Win98 SE does the same thing.
Win95 B does not have this problem at all. Just to test Win95 B, I forced a 'bad' restart by pushing the restart switch and scandisk fired up as Win95 B was rebooting. However, if I do a 'restart' from the shutdown menu, Win95 B restarts cleanly on the ASUS m/b.
Must be an incompatibility between Win98 and Win98 SE with the ASUS P2-BF. Maybe I'll try Win2k next time around.
Thanks, I'll keep you all posted.

I have installed W98/W98SE/WME on AsusP2B w/o a hitch***. Only one of the MB was flashed to v12, the others are running @ v04 or 05.
What are your BIOS settings?
***Forgot, W98SE did not like USB devices connected during install. I'm guesing that had something to do with the bios.
