I go to login on Napster today, and get this:

* Unable to login: OuTpaTienT banned: Banned by Metallica: See http://infringe.napster.com/metallica.html
* Unable to reconnect to server! (Wed May 10 18:32:11 2000)

I've been a Metallica fan since the "Kill'em All" days. I didn't even think were wrong to want to do something about piracy. But this is ridiculous. I know I didn't d/l any Metallica songs during their two day spying investigation. And I know that no Metallica was d/l from me. Only way I could have gotten on that list is simply because I HAD some Metallica songs in my library of mp3s.

Well, from a longtime fan and can now say, without any hesitation, "Screw you Metallica. As far as I'm concerned you no longer exist."

i should have been banned but i wrote a rather long, nasty lewtter to metallica's managers, and amazingly, napster still works! woohoo! free speech!!

I think its funny (and I am not picking on you Outpatient, cause technically you didnt do anything wrong with people seeing you had metallica mp3's) to hear everyone whining about not being able to use Napster for illegal activity...well I got 2 words for ya...booo-hoooo. I think Metallica has gotten stale over the years, but they still have the right to protect there music....and dont say its cause they are already millionaires...its still there right to make money!

OMG. Have you guys seen this: http://www.paylars.com/

Pay Lars????!!! WTF. Yeah, I'm sure they're really hurting for money. This is unacceptable. What, you need a little extra cash for that hair transplant Lars? F.U.

But this is what America is about. They have the right to suck as much money from the people dumb enough to spend there money on a metallica cd. I would be mad too if I made and sold something and someone else started giving it away free.

Ya know, if you are under 18, then that stupid contract would be null and void and you could do all the trading of metallica or any other band you wanted too.
I also agree 100% that it is illegal to trade music with it. Do i still use it? yup. Normally, the song quality sucks or you cannot find a full length song or album on napster. I usually end up buying the CD i want on cdnow.com or at best buy.

I truly believe we are on the verge of a revolution in the music industry. Artist will have to become adept at advertising and e-commerce. Well, the big guys will pay some one to do it, but it will hopefully be independent firms, not huge labels. Trendy artists won't produce a few hits, and then add 10 filler songs. We won't have music stuffed down our throats. Trendy teenage sheep wont have people telling them what's good and popular. The flock with spread throughout the net and people will find their true tastes and individuality...with daddy's credit card number, one song at a time. Piracy will still be found...of course. As people save radio to tape, so will people will save mp3 streams to there drives...except with digital purity. Convergence, the proliferation of broadband ISP's, and the development of wireless technology will see mp3 streams replace am/fm stereos.....

and Metallica and the RIAA will be a faded memory of tyrannical greed in an age where acceptance and adaptation were on the better side of Darwin's theory.

darn speling http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I have also been a Metallica fan since "Kill 'em All", until they started to suck with "And Justice for All". Now I really think they suck. Limp Bizkit thinks Napster is cool. Metallica is just a bunch of old farts who have compromised their music for money. They are not the Metallica I knew. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

I don't get to use it anymore. I've tried re-signing up with different names/passwords to no avail. So I must be tagged by IP address (since mine's static). But what about the dial-up users? They won't have a static IP, so I bet they can just pick a new user name and continue.

I don't normally use the @home proxy, but maybe I'll try going through that.

I find that I get a new IP from @home when I do clean istalls. Though I don't know this for sure, as I havn't done a clean install fow awhile....but I do know that I've had a few different IP's.

That's quite a bit of trouble just for Napster, but still. I was under the impression that they were just banning usernames...That's what I've been reading anyway.

When the storm was first brewing(before the user list was scanned), I moved my napster\music\metallica MP3's to another folder so they wouldnt be seen on Napster.
AS long as I don't share them any longer I should be ok.

Metallica performed a hack by finding out what particular songs are on your hard drive. Maybe Napster should use an AOL-type defense (MSN vs. AOL IM)

Metallica cannot prove that you did or did not legally own those songs.

What Metallica did is akin to knocking on your door and taking your rightfully owned CD’s from you.

The recording industry has very deep pockets, and I would not be surprised that they are paying off the judges that hear these MP3 cases.

Heres what you do if you get banned from Napster

1. You'll probably need to create a new account, so click on Start, Run, type in
regedit.

2. Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Napster. On the right side of the window after you click on the Napster folder, delete the key that says "CurrentUser". Also delete any folders below the Napster folder. (i.e. click on the plus sign and remove all those folders that have usernames.)

3. Now do a search (ctl-f) for these things one at a time:
35D38C13-1434-AB7E-003483943341AA
A1AD8C13-1383-5343-DCC38E43FF0AAE
CAD8C813-1F34-1B3E-00CEAE43FF0AAD
Delete every instance that you find of these keys. Hit F3 to continue searching. There are about 3 or 4 instances of each of these keys.

4. Reboot your system. (just in case.)

Picked this up from another Newsgroup

Are the only people banned, those that have downloaded Metal_Licka's music?
I think that they're cutting off their own appendages to spite themselves.

By the end of this court action against Napster, Metallica will have lost half their fans, including me, and their record sales are gonna be much lower anyway, cause a lot more people hate them.

I've been banned, just for having Metallica MP3's in my MP3 directory, which happened to be shared at the time they did the scan to find the users that had Metallica MP3s. I'm on dial-up, so I'm not too annoyed... But does anyone want to buy some Metallica CDs? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Check this out, it's halarious: http://metallicster.freeservers.com/
A napster clone that will only carry metallica songs...

Also, I threw together a boycott metallica graphic, feel free to use it, edit it, spread it around the net, I hope to come up with a better version soon, but here it is:

http://hammer.prohosting.com/~allenweb/antimetsmall.jpg

I had to edit it because the old version used the metallica logo, and in my fit of rage I forgot that would be copyright infringement....

If you follow the tutorial earlier in the post you can get Napster back, thanks.....

I awoke one morning this week to find that I was banned also. I did a little digging and here's what I found. The Metallica reps did a find for metallica songs, if you had one, you got banned. I have like 4 gigs of MP3's, and I share about 100 of the best to keep things moving quickly. I had an old bootleg Live version of Fuel in that share directory, and I got banned. I'm on @home, and couldn't get back on with new usernames or anything. Somewhere I read the new release of Napster has registry keys in it which are keeping us banned? Does that make sense? Anyway, I was finally able to get on, I'll get you what settings and stuff I used when I get home. Nobody is more pissed about this than I am..I have been in Napster for a long long time.

read this to keep from being banned
http://news.excite.com/news/zd/000511/15/banned-napster-users

I also read that if you uninstall then reinstall using a different name it'll work?

Toadman
05-12-2000, 07:57 AM
Yep, napster uploaded a trojan registry key to keep me from accessing napster. If you log onto napster and it automatically runs a "beta 6 performance upgrade, it hacks your registry. I had "unforgiven" in My Documents, not shared in Napster/music.And, I have the Black Album also, bought and paid for. They found the MP3 anyways and I am livid!! Who the hell they think they are going thru ALL my folders with this beta 6 upgrade? Sorry, but I smell blood...

it does not matter if you have a dynamic ip or not. i have one, and i got banned. i never had and will never have any metallica songs on my hard drive. i have songs that have mettalica song names in song title, and i got banned. it is obviously a registry issue. i saw battleship's instructions above, but decided to go the "legal" way and fill out the counter form that exists on napster. there is a chance that they will sue me anyways for copyright infringment but i do not have metallica songs on my hd and i challenge them to prove me wrong. I predict that mettalica will be going down the tubes after this shameful fiasco, because no one will want to have anything to do with them.

jad1097
05-31-2000, 11:15 AM
Metallica? Who is that?

I remember them they were once a decent band in the 80's but fubared their rep buy suing Napster(in 2000') and their fans(I am sure that don't have any of them anymore).

Good luck deep_sky

Anyone remember when VHS movies were $100 or more each? The movie industry tried stuff to stop people from recording their own copies (e.g., like the picture would go light then dark). They finally figured out how to solve the problem . . . lower the price so people would buy them rather than steal them. Maybe there's a lesson there. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I used Napster for a while. After downloading a few songs I liked, I went and bought the CDs. Wonder if they have considered the increased revenue caused by people using Napster?

Bought South Park (the movie soundtrack) after downloading some songs. South Park Bad!!! hehe http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif
