No, no, no...not what you're thinking. I've used many players already. My problem is that when I am online while listening to my mp3s, they tend to skip when I click a webpage or when the system is taxed in a certain way. I usually use Music Match or Real Jukebox. Specs: 400mhz celery, 192mb RAM
Ok, here's the question: Does the physical size of the mp3 player matter a lot when it comes to using system resources? I mean, would using Winamp (a much smaller program) make a difference compared to using big, clunky, players such as the two mentioned above?
You guys get my drift?

Why not use WinTop and see how much resource each is using then you'll know which one is easiest on the system. http://newlife-win98.server101.com/wintop_info.htm

Hi Warthog
I use WinAmp 2.6 exclusively for MP3s and get the skipping also when performing certain tasks, including loading a webpage.
Shadow, thanks for the WinTop suggestion & link. I've seen it mentioned favorably here before. I like the ability to read the WinTop readme.txt onsite before downloading. Time to try it.

Thanks for the feedback both of you http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. I'll check out the app.

In Winamp Preferences, under options there is a "priority class" 4 position slider. I'm not sure if this helps or not, but it could be something.

First, in WinAmp, make sure the priority is set to the highest setting (I think that's "realtime").
Second, I've heard many stories about Celeries not being able to handle MP3s very well at all, no matter what speed or amount of RAM.
I know my K6-2/300 system hardley ever skipped, no matter what else I was doing (except for floppy disk acess).

ONe thing that u can try is changing the output plug in in winamp, I am sure that if you do a search for them u can find many.
I used to have the same problem, but then I switched to the other build in plug in that winamp has for output.
I am prety sure its says something like direct sound plug in... It uses direct X for the transfer, try it...

So does that mean you fixed your problem warthog? Well i use MusicMatch Jukebox 4 without any problems. I'll be listening to music and get on a webpage and scrolling. Nothing happens.
My system is a Pentium 3 650e(100Mhz fsb-ready to overclock http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif) with 128mb of ram. Do you think it's just the celerons that can't handle it? You'll like your pentium 3 warthog.

Lets just say that it's not as bad but the problem is still there a bit.
Yeah, celeries suck. Course, that's what I get for buying a "budget" computer and trying to make it into a gaming system. I know I'll be happy with the P3 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

I use winamp on a Celly 366 unclocked, and it never skips for me (win98se and Win2k)
I also have a ton of RAM (320MB). Because of that, I think its more of a RAM thing than a processor thing.
On my old Pentium 200 MMX, 32MB, It skipped alot whenever I did something else, as expected.

Well, most likely a combo of both. I have 96mb of RAM and an Athlon 550 and it never skips except when dialing my ISP with my piece of **** winmodem.
OR it may be something completely different... you know computers, they're about the most unpredictable things I have ever seen.

WinAmp also work for my 233 mhz Pentium/MMX with 9GB Cheetah and Adaptec AHA2940UW.
But I find PCDJ a better Player than WinAMP.
You may find PCDJ at TUCOWS or the following

Winamp worked fine on my Pentium Classic 133 with 73MB RAM (even when playing some quite power hungry games) and still works fine with my AMD K6-2 500MHz. Even when running games or other apps.
