I have two machines, an old P166 and a brand new 600 PIII that I have linked together with two network cards and an old RJ-45 cable that has been torn apart for the use of peer to peer connections. The problem is that I don't have two moniters to use, just one. Does anyone know of any type of software that will allow me to "look" at my desktop on the other machine? I have tried NetBus Pro 2.1 and it does not seem to find the other machine hooked up. I also tried Vbus, and that doesn't work either. Each machine is setup using TCP/IP and IPX Protocols under a windows networking environment. Both are set to automatically obtain an IP, but only my PIII registers one in use. The old P166 just shows straight zeros for an IP. Is this what is causing NetBus to freak out and not see my network neighborhood? Both machines show up under the network neighbor under windows just fine. Does the software not see a peer to peer connetion? Game work real well....

Oh, the old P1 is using Win95 vs B and the new on is on Win98 first release. Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have seen programs/kits that let people share a computer on different sets of monitors around a house....

This one is good and will fit on a floppy. It is slightly laggier than PC anywhere but good nonetheless http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/index.html

Thanks for the ideas! I will have to try them out. Any clue as to how to share a dialup connection between two machines? Maybe the software will do it...Thanks and I will let you know.

you can share a dialup connection if you run win98SE on your main computer it's built into windows

Okay,

I tried the VNC software, and it was nice but didn't work. I still can't see the other machine. I am getting to the point where I think that I am in need of a hub. I can't ping either machine and setting up IP's on both isn't working either. Any ideas before I breakdown and buy a hub?

Okay, I am almost convinced now that I need to have them networked through a hub in order for any program to see the computers correctly. I have tried dozens of programs, including watchdog, and nothing is working. I do thank everyone for their time and for the ideas on sharing a dialup connection.

carbon copy is a great program to use. I use it and it lets you do just about anything on the other computer just as if you were sitting there in front of it. http://www.compaq.com/services/carboncopy/
i have neverhad any problems with using it.

How close together are the computers? A friend of mine has 3 computers hooked up to 1 monitor via a switch box. Just turn the switch to see the other desktop.

You might want to look at the Jana Server. It let's multiple users access the internet through one modem. On their webpage, they also refer to setting up intranet connections. It's Free. Why not? ... http://www.jana-server.ocm.de/Englisch/FrameSet.htm

In response to your inquiry: > Yeah it may be cheaper, Im not sure where he got his but I was in a comp store today and they could get one for 2 comps and 1 monitor for $20 Cdn (12 US?) or a 4 in 1 with keyboard didnt ask price on that one, you will need an extra cable as well. They called it a 2 to 1 VGA switch. I have used my friends a couple times (he has 4 in 1) you just turn the dial to switch desktops no hassle.

Okay,

Just bought a hub, so I am going to fiddle with that first. The switch sounds like a good idea too, and I may use that later. Do you know if they make a switch box for the joystick ports on the back of sound cards? Thats where the switch box would come in REALLY handy. (Flightstick, Gamepads, yadaa, yadda yadda ) Thanks again, and check out my new problem in the Networking section...

I use this program. It kicks MAJOR BOOTY! Better screen refresh rate and its small enough to fit on a floppy! www.famatech.com (http://www.famatech.com) . Its called Remote Administrator. Can run 'hidden' or have an icon on the task bar. So..wanna see if your boss goes to those porn sites? Nah..wait..I don't advise you to do that http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Its got secure connection and its even fast enough to work with a 56k modem. You can set the screen colors from 16, 256 or 16 bit!. I love it.

Update...

It works now!!! Thanks to all those who helped. My network is running successfully now, I did get the hub to work. Several notes...

1. When networking Windows 95 vs B with anything using an IPX Protocol, there are a few bugs that need to be fixed...see the following link for more info on the error... http://www.addtron.com/test1/ipxer254.htm

2. When trying to use remote administrative tools, you need a specified IP address on each machine in order to connect or "find" it on your network.

Thanks again, you all have been wonderful!

By the way, I bought a Bay networks 4 port hub and it is doing dandy. Not bad for 35 smack-a-roonies. ($)

For monitor sharing the only way to go is a KVM switch. It not only shares the monitor but the keyboard and mouse as well. This is really important if you don't have a lot of desktop space which is my problem. I got the Aten Miniview from Appleseed for about $95 delivered. Everything is controlled by hotkey combinations on the keyboard. That's cheap and absolutely more convenient than the other alternatives in my opinion. I realize you fixed your problem with the network but I was thinking it may have been your cable. Either too long or not a cross-over?

Actually,

The cheapest alternative, without buying a switch, is to buy a hub and network the two machines useing regular RJ-45 cables. Originally I had used a cross over cable or "peer to peer" connection. That cable, for some reason, doesn't allow these programs that i have been using "see" the other machine. After buying a cheap 4 port hub (bay networks 35 bucks) and two cables (around 15 bucks total, each a seven footer) I had a network that runs quite well and could "see" the other machine using VNC Remote Admin software. I only use one keyboard and mouse too! Alltogether, for around 50 bucks I accomplished what I needed to. Still making tweaks!

Thanks again to all that replied to this thread. I am pretty much finished up here.

Signing off,
