Looking for recommendations for good AV protection for W2K.

AVP Pro Platinum apparently isn't ready for W2K - at least on my machine it induces slow system response and intermittent freezing needing a hard reboot. At the AVP site, W2K is not listed also. Removed AVP - problems gone.

So, what do you recommend?

Thanks http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hi codybear

Mntsnow ran an AVP comparison with me and it seems to work for him on a similar system, but it brought my W2K to it's knees. So.. it must my configurations. 2K runs great again when it's removed.

I'm going to try NAV2K again alone and see.

Thanks for responding http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well AVP seemed to run with a touch of a performace hit for me BUT being the "geek" I am it was too much of a hit...Upon uninstalling thru the Add/Remove option and then preparing to do a reboot so I would have a clean system so I could go and THEN handpick the leftover AVP registry stuff (they all leave something in the registry dont they!) it proceeded to shutdown nicely BUT never wanted to come backup to my network login! Just would crash and loop till I got tired of seeing that and restored the registry from before the install of AVP and Here I am....Thank goodness http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well Mntsnow, if it doesn't work for you, it sure as heck won't work for me!

Different problems, but still problems...

Thanks for posting and for the side-by-side, Mnstnow and I'm sure glad you got your Reg back! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Guys (non gender specific) there is a free AV utility available for Win2K: InoculateIT Personal Edition, available for download from the Computer Associates web site. That's what I run on my Win2K box. Seems to do the job OK.

mmmmmmm methinks the lady needs more power http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif..If it does give a hit to performance I would not notice but would be open to anything else ya'll find and are happy with...follow the leader and YOU are the leader so let us know http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey codybear http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

P3 450 @ 527 w/256mg of Siemens... not enough power? Mine didn't just take a "performance hit" - it crawled on its knees. Snowman put AVP on his P3 600, 128mgs, and had a hit but not nearly (I don't think) as bad as mine. Which leads me to think that I have something not configured properly.

Sure is speedy without the AVware tho.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Going to try NAV2K and that InoculateIT first, and if I still continue with the performance fiasco, I'll probably just format/reinstall - again. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Oh, and there's an Abit BX6-2 BIOS update for ACPI problems. Not sure if that's related.

ok ok so power ya got but I uninstalled Norton and cleaned it the best I could and really didnt see any difference and now that its reinstalled it seems the same also...
I'm running an athlon so I dont know if that makes a diff or not...When you find something you like then I will try it and let you know...I'm a little puzzled as to what could not be configured right for it to do that to your machine??..Good Luck and keep us posted

Ok! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'm scanning my sys w/InoculateIT as we speak... it seems to be doing the job, and I'm not getting any noticeable performance degradation. Easy install, configure. Runs like a top! Thanks, linux_guru http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I wonder tho how accurate/up-to-date it is with it being free?

Codybear, since I had no prob with the IIT, I'll uninstall it and d/l the NAV2K again sometime this weekend, as I do want to see how well this works alone.

Then if that works, I'll try both together (run separately) as I like to have a couple different AV programs to use.

Thanks again, guys http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

socalgal: CA post regular updates for the virus dat files. There is an auto-download feature in InoculateIT to update itself. Works for me.

Hi linux_guru http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes, I have been auto downloading and updating, and it's running just fine here on W2K http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Have you run IIT along with any other virus program (on the same machine, but not run at the same time [of course])? I'm going to be installing NAV7 Corp.Ed., soon and was wondering if your (or anyone's) experience is that they play nice together...

(On my 98 box I had AVP and NAV5 both installed and had no problems.)

FYI: I'm using Network Associates McAfee Antivirus for NT 4.0 on Win2K and it appears to be working fine.

<EDIT> OOPS! I just tried installing it and found that it does not install in the current version on my system. It used to work with a beta version I initially had installed.........

I ran InoculateIT and norton 5.0 on windows 2000 at the same time, worked all right till I overclocked. Uninstalled norton everything is fine. InoculateIT get my vote.

Actually I installed AVP Platinum v3.0 build 132.2 with Windows2000 Pro FINAL on my two PCs:

1) P3 933MHz 256MB RAM
2) P2 Mobile 400 MHz 128MB RAM

ABSOLUTELY fine, no performance hit, no crashes or slowdowns, no nothing!
Everything works ok, even the online update feature.
Maybe mine is a more recent build than yours ?

Questions welcome.

Bye,
EnTiTy

socal, you might want to try Norton, i have been using it for years and it has never let me down. If you want some good trojan detector software, i would recommend going to www.moosoft.com (http://www.moosoft.com) and downloading TheCleaner 3.1. It can detect trojans not even the well known AV programs cant. I had to find that out the hard way unfortunatly http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Good feedback here http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif It's interesting the mixed results w/AVP Platinum.

I'm currently running The Cleaner and InoculateIT. NAV7 Corp.Ed. is the next addition - hoping they all play nice together - as I like having a backup AV program. We'll see.... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
