Windows Neptune was killed months ago and will never ship. But Whistler has just been released as a beta.

* MICROSOFT RELEASES WHISTLER PREVIEW

As reported yesterday in WinInfo, Microsoft has released the first
preview build of Whistler, the next version of Windows 2000, to beta
testers. Whistler build 2250 includes a simple new "skinning" feature
called Visual Styles that lets you apply a "classic" or "professional"
look-and-feel to the user interface (UI). But the interface changes are
relatively mild compared to what Microsoft has in store further down
the road: You'll find color changes here and there and a much
friendlier Control Panel applet than was previously available. Other
changes in Whistler 2250 include new Explorer view styles, a Remote
Desktop feature in the Professional Edition, and numerous other small
tweaks. But Whistler, identified as Windows version 5.1 in System
Properties, isn't a huge change from Windows Millennium Edition
(Windows Me) or Win2K.
"Windows Whistler is the next version of Windows built on the
Windows NT platform, targeted as the best version of Windows for both
home and business computing environments," Microsoft states in the
Whistler preview release notes. "Whistler Professional will contain
further product enhancements over Win2K. Additionally, Whistler will be
our primary consumer-based version of Windows with the introduction of
Whistler Personal, tailored to replace the Windows 9x based version of
Windows for the home. Microsoft is committed to delivering a single-
code-based version of Windows, based on the NT platform, beginning with
Windows Whistler for all Windows customers."
The Whistler preview ships in Personal and Professional editions
only, although Microsoft is also making the Whistler platform software
development kit (SDK), "checked" builds, and a Device Driver Kit (DDK)
available to testers. And testers received an older build--2239--on
Friday that will let them get their hands on a version of Whistler
Server.
