Any experience with peoplepc? Peronally, I am a tad leary of those deals. I have no coherent expolanation for why I feel that way.

I would take a look at the cost of a descent PC and a look at the going rates for dial-up access in your friend's area. This may not be a universal list, but it is a good starting point.

Some ISP's here allow unlimited access at 56K access for as little as $7.50/month. Other's provide free internet access in exchange for viewing their advertisements.

Keep your options open and consider the total cost of either option.

The problem I see is what if the internet service sucks? You can't use another one down the street. Also will dail-ups be used much in 3 years? With the web growing and new technologies comming out there may be a new way to access the web. I've even heard of using powerlines. And what will be considered a "new uptodate computer" in three years?
Personally I would stear clear.
