i'm sure this has been covered before... but this is what i was hoping to do.

my current system is as such:
dual boot win2k and 98se
amd k6-2 500
128 meg ram
diamond viper II
gigabyte ga5ax mobo
linksys nic card
aopen sound
philips 4x cdr
ultra66
2 hd's on the ultra 66
maxtor 20.4 gig 7200 rpm ultra66
fujitsu 6 gig ultra33

the maxtor has 3 partitions... 1 for 98se, 1 for win2k and one for storage
the fujitsu has only one partition. both drives are set as master on my ultra 66 card.

i just finished downloading both iso's for mandrake 7.1, can i just install to my clean 6 gig? will setup let me choose which partition? does it need to be formated other than fat32? will linux add itself to my exsisting boot menu? anything else i should know? I tried installing a version of linux last year and had trouble, i would like to actually get it installed this time.

thanks in advance

Mandrake will install into it's own partition, as long as you have the free space, regardless of what else is on the disk. You will get an option during the install, as to where you want to install the linux boot loader. MBR of first sector of the linux partition. You choose the latter if you already have another O.S. installed, and dont want it messed up. You then need to add an entry in the boot.ini file for windoze, to boot to linux. I wrote a "HOW-TO", for this procedure, with a Linux / NT dual boot setup. It should be the same under Win2K, I just haven't got around to trying it yet. If you want a copy of the HOW-To, just email me at melnetsol@hotmail.com, & I'll send you a copy.

Please post the entire how-to. Or e-mail it to me and I will post it or put it on my site.

I have been looking for a few months for someone to confirm or discuse how it would work.

Here is the orginal thread/idea I had. (http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/000872.html)

Would I be able to boot Win ME, Win2000, Linux and BEOS 4.5?
