here is the original message posted a few days ago on another BBS:

"My mother in-law's hard drive went out so I replaced it with one I had around the office. I have had some problems locating the cd-rom drivers so I'm trying to install the OS with the win95 setup diskettes. The diskettes will go thru the format process, scandisk, etc. just fine. Then I get the error: "Error loading GDI.EXE Restart you computer". This is as far as I've gotten. Obviously if I can't load the GDI.EXE, I cannot load Windows. The computer is some ancient pc, I think a P-100. Any ideas?"

What I've done since: I hooked up another CD-ROM drive and got that working no problem. Still when I run setup off of the Win95 CD I get the same error about loading GDI.EXE. The exact error message is "Error loading gdi.exe - Resart your computer". This error comes after fdisk and format. I've tried this on two different hard drives with the same results. Is there something is the BIOS I'm missing? Any other ideas?

What others have told me to do: This error can occur when a virus is present in the boot sector. It can also occur when the video card is not in the correct mode for operation. If it's AGP, set it back to 1x, if it's PCI, put it in a different slot.
Change video cards. I have done all of this except for changing the video card with no success.

I've formatted and reinstalled windows on countless computer, and have never seen anything like this. Something in BIOS is all I can think of, but I don't know what. Any thoughts?

Have you tried the install on another machine and then putting the HDD back in the original? Also run fdisk /mbr before the install!

Easyest way to install win-s is to use the win98 bootdisk. It boots you computer with cd-rom and other useful tools.

*Only problem in installing an old ver. of win95 is the FAT. Older ver. may want it to be FAT16. Seems like chinees? Contact an expert!
