I'm using a VIA Technologies: VT82C686A soundcard, and the PCI probe of the SNDCONFIG utility correctly detected this. However, when the sample sound was played, not only was it not audible, I got the following error message:
"/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/sb-0: init_module: Device or resourse busy"
I wonder how this is the case, because I get the same result whether or not I boot directly in to linux. BTW, I dual boot between windows98 and Red Hat Linux6.1 . Even at the time where linux was the only OS on my system, I had the same error.
Furthermore, I don't know what to do with the file in the manufacturer's disk. It seems like a script, but it's only one file, and it has no extension. Please advise.

The sound chip is not supported by the OSS drivers - the only way to be sure of compatibility with sound equipment in Linux is to have a genuine Creative sound device - even 100% Sound blaster compatible will not work worth dukey - sorry.

I have been through the sound thing with Linux - it is possible to boot into DOS and initialize the sound device, then soft-boot into Linux and use a generic SB driver to get sound by using a DOS program called "loadlin.exe" and a copy of your vmlinuz kernal image on your "C:\" drive, and executing the DOS command c:\loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/hdX* where "X*" is your actual Linux partition or drive - but it is hardly worth it -- did I loose you??

You really ought to have a compatible sound device.
