I have just installed BeOS 5.0 as an upgrade to my BeOS 4.5 system - it was painless. All of my hardware was already supported so there was no problem there. What is very right is seamless support of mpeg and avi video in one multimedia player, Real Player G2 (and it actually works), and faster networking with a some refinements to the browser.
I've only had it up and running for about an hour but I am quite happy with it and convinced that there is a future for this compact OS.

What are the advandtages of BeOS. What was it designed for? Now that it is free I thought I would give it a shot.

I will have to check it out. I wonder if they have added more hardware support.

Shinikey, best source of Be info: www.be.com (http://www.be.com)
Jad - I don't know about all the changes, but the driver for my Creative Ensoniq Audio PCI sure is better - crisp & clear.
There is a CDBurner that works with my CDR but it has limits.
BTW - I am using the "Pro" edition that I paid for as an upgrade.

I don't believe the free edition comes with Real Player. I haven't tried the Pro edition yet. I'm surprised that Real would write the player for an OS that doesn't have a system tray to junk up all the time.
Be is best used for multimedia apps, where it is by far the best OS available today.

The free personal edition of BeOS does not include Real Player G2 and a few other minor things but otherwise it works great.

About BeOS:
Modems: Most controller based PnP modems are recognized by Be and will work - those of us who have
set our internal modems non-PnP for Linux can use them in Be but you have to go to
"preferences/devices" and create a "new jumpered device" and choose "serial port" and set the IRQ
and I/O addy accordingly (reboot) - then use "modem" on the dialup utility to configure your
modem from the list or "custom" and select the proper serial port.
Of course external modems always work. Winmodems do not work under BeOS or Linux at this time.
OAS (on another subject)
Be Partitions:
The best way to run BeOS is from an actual "Be" partition:
One nice thing is that the Be partitioning utility works even with the version that
runs from within Windows - so if you have some free space or a partition you don't need you can
use the Be partition utility to convert it to the Be file system and just copy the entire
contents fo your virtual Be drive onto this new Be partition - also install the Be boot loader
(do a search for "boot" and find the installer) in the MBR and manage your OSs that way - reboot
to Windows/ uninstall the "Runs-under-Windows" BeOS, reboot and use the boot loader to boot into
your new, faster, BeOS install - no need to boot with floppy or boot Windows in order to boot
BeOS --
Just FYI

Another good place to post Be questions or just discuss it is www.begroovy.com (http://www.begroovy.com)

BeOS really rules.
I have never had so much fun installing a OS as with BeOS. I had to use 0 disks/floppies to install this baby. NO reboots and it recognized every peripheral/hardware piece with no fuss muss or bother. I have it running on a K6-2 350 with 3 other OSes. That's right, a 4 way boot. Win98SE, WinNT 4.0 Workstation, Win2K Pro and BeOS 5.0 personal edition. I am really seriously thinking of upgrading to the Pro edition for the SMP capabilities. And for ~$70US it is an absolute steal. I haven't had time to play with it that much but it is definitely the real deal.

I dunno just downloaded it, and it looks cool and all ... but its in greyscale and I can't find any GeForce drivers ! Plus I can't connect to the net with it ... I have a Diamond SupraMax ... or Supra ... or something like that.
Baffles me. It's pretty even in greyscale ... but I can't use it because I miss colour so much ....

GeForce drivers are forthcoming check the Be site from time to time for more info on drivers. Your modem is either a "Winmodem" or it is set to non-plug-n-play mode with jumpers. The Winmodem is not currently supported and the other can be configured as mentioned previously in this thread.

I'm waiting on those GeForce drivers. Do you know if I can download them using windows and then install them in BeOs ? I'm thiking so but if not it's time to delete BeOS.
The modem is in the list of supported Modems ... so I don't know what is wrong. I've had a few problems with my PCI slots though ...

Right after it was released, I installed the one that runs along side W98. Meaning the version which boots from an icon from W98 desktop. I was quite impressed. Sadly, it does not support my video card, so I had to look it over in SDT VGA MONOCHROME, so I did not go too far with it. Too bad, I would like to use BEOS regularly.

They are working on U66 drivers i think. Yours booted into greyscale becuase the graphics card is not (yet supported). I have been using be for the last 36 hours...its nice..but i am bored with it. There is nothing to do!! It doesnt' have any games built in (not even solitaire!! even most linux flavours have that!). You can download alot of Be shareware from bebits.com. I would just think that an OS at version 5 would offer a little more for us. It doesn come with some nice built in stuff tho. Another downfall: NO JAVA. no javascript or java class files are supported in the web browsers because thre is no java virutal machine. So many of my webpages were inaccessable to me. Oh well.

Well I have uninstalled BeOS. It's 500 megs of NOTHING. It doesn't do anything, it doesn't recognize my hardware AT ALL and I can't ... do ... anything with it. nothing. Zip. zilch. Zero. A woeful pile, that's all it is. It was no faster than Win98 and at least Win98 knows how to install itself. It didn't even know what my sound card was ... or it didn't know how to use my CD-ROM. Bah ! Stay away from this OS.

If BeOS 5 fails to recognise your hardware, even though the site says it is supported, then try booting from the floppy insteaed. Originally, my network card wouldnt work unless I booted from the floppy.
Oh and it is a lot faster than Windows.

I was booting off a floppy. It saw NOTHING and did nothing. It was totally lame. It says it supports SB Live ! but apparently it doesn't for me.
And no, it was not faster. Not at all. In fact, on nonNetworked boot up, Win98 is faster since I don't have to boot off a floppy. Any attempt to use the Win98 to BeOS boot failed. It would hang. It was a total waste of time.
