Not a question here but perhaps an answer for someone...

I have a 233mmx (smokin' chip I know! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )
on an FIC mainboard. Can handle SIMMs or DIMMs. Have been running SIMMs on it for a while now under Win95/98.

I went to switch to DIMMS and the beastie
froze up repeatedly. Was trying to put in
PC100s. Got the dealer to swap out for PC66.
(possibly a mistake I realize now.) I did this thinking that my creaky old MOBO and PROC might not be able to handle PC100. Still locked up with PC66. Checked the manual for jumper settings. Checked the BIOS for anything there. Nada.

Hmmmmmm.

Ok, boot to safe mode. Hmmmm. Works now.
Try loading a 29mb jpeg. No problem. Hmmm.
Windows driver!

Go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager.
Remove ALL System Devices. Reboot. Win98
reloads all drivers. Stumbles over the video adapter ATI Wonder and a generic PCI
on the other computer (doing this to 2 mostly
identical systems). Have to reboot a couple more times to get the video drivers to configure and load up correctly.

Problem seems to be cured.

I can't tell you which system driver was the culprit. All I know is that this worked.

Can load intense amounts of stuff at one time now.

Have stopped swearing now.

Hope this helps someone else.

Have owned 3 ATI cards. Had a 8mb. PCI Xpert98 that worked well in Win98 but huge pain in the **** to get to work in WinNT Workstation. Always took 5 or 6 attempts and wanted to go in as an /8514???. Worked but I wasn't happy. (it seemed to be so :> )Then, big mistake here, went to ATI 32MB. AGP Expert2K. Nothing but aggro w. both of them. I tried turning off just about everything but it repeatedly crashed/froze I.E. 5.01 when I was online and when I had Win Explorer open and my dialup connection was made the screen "wobbled" like a 1/4" thick stream of water being shaken from the top. Jeez, I thought I was hallucinating. It did exactly the same thing with both 32mb cards in both of my comps. comp1 was K6-2 350 128mb ram on a asus P5A with bios revision 1007a. comp2 was K6-2 300 w. 64mb ram on a ECS p5sd-b+. Exactly the same probs with both cards. Therefore drivers comes to mind. I had no probs with (still have) a PCI Voodoo2 3dfx Blaster 16mb or either of my Matrox cards (Millennium G400 AGP 16mb dualhead and a G200 8mb. AGP) I doubt I will go near the new Radeon? card from ATI no matter how good the specs. I also build boxes as a career and almost all the ATI cards (no other brands) pop out of the agp slot when a tower is moved (turned off :> ) from horizontal to vertical. What gives ATI?
