Do a search for a software prog. called "Net2Phone", I used it to call 1-800 numbers (I called my parents business # to test it out and had a nice conversation using the software, a mic, and speakers) If you have a 56K or preferably faster connection, DSL or Cable, a mic, and speakers, you can make 1-800 #'s for free using Net2Phone. If you want to make local calls or long-distance you have to pay for their service which is not very expensive also!

Once in my youth...about 3 months ago...during an inebriated evening my friends and I used dialpad in conjunction with the wonderful EAX effects that Surround Mixer can implement with the mic...altering your voice. Those Texans are good sports. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif The security office at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas didn't enjoy is as much though.

Anyways...dialpad works. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I've called and been called with www.dialpad.com (http://www.dialpad.com) and it works pretty well as long as the PC user has a good set of headphones with a mic. Even works calling Hawaii http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
And if your really bored you can even call yourself http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

It's my understanding that the person on the regular phone has to be in the US, right? Does that mean that as long as I'm on the computer calling out, I can call into the US from Canada?

Has anyone ever successfully used one of these sites to make free PC-to-Phone LD calls? It doesn't work for me. Are these sites just a hoax, or do you need more than just a microphone & speakers?
www.dialpad.com (http://www.dialpad.com) www.phonefree.com (http://www.phonefree.com)

Feel free to list any sites I haven't thought of.

We use dialpad all the time at my house - it's great! I'm sure we've saved several hundred dollars in the past few months.

If you're going to use it, be sure to spend the $ for a GOOD headphone/mic setup -it makes a big difference.

Also, high bandwith does help. When we had 56k dial-up the quality was like a CB radio or bad AM. With DSL it actually sounds better than the regular phone (probably due to the quality speaker in the headphones).

They aren't a hoax. They use voice over IP technology and subsidize their costs with advertising - dialpad.com works well. I've used it to call myself to check the lag and the delay is minimal.

I use Dialpad often. It all depends on my ISP's line strength at the time. The best improvement that I made was hooking up a stereo amp to my system. In order to eliminate the echo on your recievier's end, you have to turn your recieving pot down. With a good amp. it's an afterthought adustment, and it eliminated any echo. I too thought that it was feedback, untill I accidentally left the speakers on one day. It turned into one big speaker phone, and worked great.

Hmmm.. I'm on a DSL connection, and have a great headphone and microphone set.. When I dial a 1-800 number to test it, it will ring, then say, "Call" and not do anything.. What should I do?

Hey, SETI, where could I get some microphone stuff that will change the input, such as you were talking about?

Not for prank calls/stuff like that.. It would be great for some sound effects I need.

Dialpad is great. I have turned many people on to it. Good headset is definitely a must. Try it you'll never use AT&t again

Hey Brandon184 and others:

I've also tried Dialpad, and get the same problem. It says call and rings, rings, etc, but never no answer.

Does anyone have ANY idea how to configure ZoneAlarm to work with dialpad?

What about for people in Canada? Is there something similar that will let me call long distance in Canada?

This is a cool little service.

What does it bring you up as on a Caller ID?

I read somewhere that you have to have a gadget doohickey for it to work, like this:
http://internetphonewizard.com/

Do you guys use something like this?

Does the speaker icon have to exist in the systray for it to work?

Can anyone test that theory for me please?

The little doohickey allows you to talk over the phone itself.

I recently downloaded a new one Callrewards Webphone. It has a couple of adjustments lacking in dialpad. I've only used it once so far, but both seem to work well. A lot of it depends on your connection and your processor.
