Ok, I keep my computer on 24/7 and only restart when my system resourse available gets low. Now should I put the Energy Saving on or should I keep it off. At the moment I have it off. Should I put the system on sleep mode when I get off or not. Who out there use a Screen Saver. Should I or shoulded I. Basically I want to know how you have your system set up when you're not on it. Any and all advise will be appreciated. Thank you.

Well i used to use a screen saver but then i guess it just didn't appeal to me no matter how cool it was. I now have my computer set up to turn off the monitor at 3 minutes. The reason for this is because at 1 minute you can be reading something and it just shuts off. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif So at 3 minutes it gives you enough time to read but save energy and money. My hard drive is set to power down after 30 minutes but doesn't because i run RC5 on both of my systems. I really don't like to put it on standby because you might as well turn it off. Standby might save your place on the web or in a paper but mine powers down all the way and turns off and i'm left with green light flashing. Some motherboards aren't capable of shutting off the entire computer in standby mode, but mine does. On standby mode the computer has to power all the drives back up including hard drive putting more stress on your power supply. This is like turning it off but without having to go through the boot process. So mine stays on all the time with the monitor off but with the hard drive still spinning. Nothing has happened to it. Some people think that keeping your computer on for a long time can wear down your hard drive but usually hard drive failure usally occurs at startup or power up. I like it the way it is. Ready to go when I am.

Good luck and happy computing http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Saaaaayyy, didn't you post a similar question a while back (http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006257.html)?

I've normally turned mine off at night, but the last few weeks I've been leaving it on because of a HD problem!!
Fool thing makes noise & fails to recognize during cold boot. Takes several tries to get it going. Once it's up, it's fine indefinately.
(Yes I KNOW it's gonna fail soon, and yes it IS backed up!)

Anyway, I just leave it on and turn off the monitor.

Yeah, I asked a question like that not long ago.
I leave my comp on 24/7 and restart everytime I log off. When I am not using it, I turn my monitor off and put my computer in sleep mode. I have the task scheduler set up to wake the comp up at 3:00 AM and perform scandisk, defrag, and cleanup weekly. It saves me a lot of trouble.

hd581 This is a different question but related.

I do use a screen saver and have the monitor shut down after a while but never use sleep mode or turn off the hard disk.

only restart when my system resourse available gets low

If you get a memory defragger or like utility, you won't have to reboot your system to retore its speed. I like Memturbo the best except that it only defrags up to 128MB of RAM. So I use FreeMem. Much better than RamBooster. Only thing I don't like about it is that it does not run in the system tray.

I leave ym monitor on so I can get up the stairs with no lights and then it goes into sleep mode with my system running RC5 with the system getting full power (it is not in sleep, just my monitor)

Thanks all for your responses. Yes this was similar to my other post, but I asked if I should keep it on 24/7. Now that I do, or actually did I was wondering what my computer should do when it is on 24/7 and I'm not there. Well once again thanks for your all your input.

Me too. I have the monitor power down after 15 minutes, but I leave the system at full power to work on RC5.
