50% of the time when i start my computer win98se will only bootup to the background screen, but there will be no task bar or shortcut symbols. My mouse is not frozen, but my only option is to reboot, have win98 scan my hard drives(because of improper shutdown) and then win98 will bootup properly. Any suggestions?

Memory, drive data cables, or cpu - my guess is that one of these is likely the cause of your problem.

Memory - try reseating it, used modest settings in BIOS - if PC100 can the board be configured to PC66 for the purpose of testing?

Drive data cables - try reseating them;
better yet, replace them with another.

CPU - if its overclocked try setting it back to normal and see if the problem clears up.

It sounds like it could be some sort of software conflict to me. Have you tried the Windows troubleshooter through the Start>Help function? It can actually be helpful at times!? I'd suggest paying special attention to the msconfig directions.

I've seen similar symptoms when the graphics accelerator is turned up too high. Try lowering the graphics hadware acceleration settings in control panel, and see if that makes your problem go away. It's worked for me in the past.
