Is this safe to do?

update my version of 98 to second edition or will it overwrite critical things in the MBR or some other place so disabling my NT installation.

I have Win98 on the first partition and NT on the second...

Would it be any safer if I put 98 on a different drive and in that case would it be possible to do that and then still boot my NT?

This is critical as I just cannot loose access to my NT installation!

thanks for all your help and suggestions

I'm not a expert but I was able to do it with help on this forum. I setup Win9x (MUST use FAT 16 file type),then installed NT from windows. They were on separate partions(used Partion Magic) It can be done without P-Magic just not as easy. Run a search in this forum, by user gene1938 it will show instructions to follow(it was clear enough for a beginner such as myself) NT boot files have to be set up under the 2 gig boot limit but the rest of NT files can be past the 2gig limit.

well, I have a fully functional dual boot working right now, I just was wondering if I could harmlessly upgrade the 98 portion of it to second edition...

I think if you upgrade your 98 to SE, it will screw up the dual boot option. I just got w2k so I don't really know the details of how it works. I think 98SE will put its boot record over the NT one but I don't know how easy it is to recover from that. Maybe you can just reinstall NT with the repair existing installation option?? Just my thoughts, proceed with caution!!!
