i am thinking of installing win2k on my dad's computer, but was wondering about partitioning.... the install proggie says something about making it's own partition so that you can do a clean install instead of an "upgrade" install... does anyone know what this does?.... i had been having problems installing this before (check out here (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/000715.html) for more insight on my probs), but now i am at my dad's house, and it now works.... so, i am going to try to install, but only if it can make it's own partition.... also, if i can do this partition thing through the install proggie, then how much free space do i need? (i have about 1.7 gigs free... is this enough?)

well, i sure hope this can work.... TIA...

I would recommend a clean install. An upgrade converts your windows 98 to windows 2000. A lot of people have problems after doing this. You say that you have 1.7 gigs free. This might be enough for a limited install. I mean it is enough for the os, but it isn't going to leave you a lot of room for programs, etc. W2K doesn't include a partion resizer. So if your 1.7 gigs of free space is already in a partition then you are out of luck without a third party program(no free ones that I know of) unless you want to wipe the whole hard drive and start over from scratch making seperate partitions.Does this make sense? W2K can create a partition in unpartioned space, and it can delete partitions to make room for its own partition, but it can not resize an existing one.

Mind if I jump in?
I haved an 18 GB HD that is unpartitioned. When I install Win 2000, and want to do so in a dual boot environment, are you saying that Win2000 will allow me to set up a partition during the setup process so that I do not have to partition my drive before installation. (major run on sentence)
Thanks

RJ, IF you want to dual boot you will have to have Win9x or the other OS installed FIRST and start the install of Win2K from inside that OS.

Win2K will allow you to partition UNconfigured free space (including deleting existing partitions and then configureing that space) but will not allow you to resize existing partitions without ruining data that is currently present on that partition (unlike Partition Magic)

Thanks. I think it will be worth it to own Partition Magic. I called the company and they said Win2000 compatible will be available in April and if I but 5.0 now the upgrade is free and downloadable. Seems win win to preserve my data.
Thanks again

Cujo, Just read the HCL (Hardware Compatablity List) that is in the root directory on the win2K CD and see if your own parts are listed as being supported as Only have a MODEL number doesnt do me much good http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Also check the manufacturers sites for new drivers as they may now have some that work. My WinTv card showed as not being compatible but their site had some drivers that work fine in WIn2000.

I don't really think 1.7gig is enough if you want any kind of apps on it.
