Hope to test Opera with Be, Linux and Windows 2k pro. Originally thought of using 3 identical hard drives when a friend suggested using VMware for this project because it allows you to toggle between different OSes without rebooting--which could be a significant time saver.

Does VMware give a level playing field for these OSes?

Any experience, pointers or recommendations using VMware to test the same application with multiple OSes?

A friend of mine indicated that he uses this at work. He is working for a small company doing strictly java programming. They have NT and Linux on one box. He said that nt can crash/blue screen and linux is still available. He said that it was good, however I do not have any personal experience with this.

My knowledge of vmware is mostly from other people, however I'll share what I have. First, it currently supports only linux and windows flavors, so if you need Be or something else, you're out of luck. You also better have a fast machine, I'd say at least P3-500 and 128Mb of RAM, to make it work smoothly. Go to their site http://www.vmware.com and look at screenshots yourself. Also, it's not free. Commercial license costs about $300, but you may get student/enthusiast license for ~$100 I believe. Finally, they have demo, so just try it yourself and decide.
