Hello all. Just a quick question regarding virtual memory. On a P3 500 w/320MB RAM and 2 20GB (UDMA/66) hard drives, would it be better to specify my own virtual memory settings, or let Windows take care of it? Basically, how can I get the best performance out of my RAM?

You have really much RAM so you shouldn't put the virtual memory high. If you specify it yourself you can actually gain additional performance (very less), make sure the minimum and maximum values are the same. This should prevent Windows from loading the swap file larger or smaller. This should give you some additional performance. You should give the computer at least 64Mb Virtual (for normal use) or 100Mb for games.

With that much RAM try disabling VM entirely, and monitor memory with System Monitor to see how much physical memory is being used for various applications.
I find that Win98 manages VM poorly, and I hace been experimenting running 256 mb. RAM system VM free. So far so good.
