Does windows boot into safe mode at all? It could be a driver problem.

sure I could logon with a safemode...
but I don't know what to do in there.
If i ddin't use safemode, windows will hang before any GUI displays and the message will appear...I even tried restoring the registry files that I backed up yesterday, but no luck at all.

Hi PrimalX
We really need more info to help you better.
What are your system specs, OS, and are you overclocking?
Any recent hardware/software changes? Tweaking lately?
Let us know.
Hi-
I received this error with both '95 and '98 with an AMD 350. However, on occasion a log in screen would come up prior to the error, but the error occurred 9 times out of ten. There is an article and patch on the Microsoft site- can't remember the name.

From the little bit of information you've given us, it looks like a driver problem or a device is incorrectly set up. Give us some more info on your system and we'll see what we can do http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Found the article:
If it is a AMD-K6-2 or faster.

Although it states for win 95, I still had a problem with 98.
Error messages can be
Device IOS failed to initialize. Windows protection error. You must reboot your computer.
Windows Protection Error. You must reboot your computer.
Note: This problem is very intermittent at 350 MHz, but occurs more often at higher speeds.

My K6-II wouldnt even make safe mode at speeds over 300. We don't even know what cpu he has so we really can't help until we get more info.
from the sound of his problem it doesnt sound like its the patch thats needed, or indeed an issue with the AMD cpu. But until we get more details I'm stumped http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif

Last resort:
Rename "c:\system.1st to system.dat & place it in your C:\windows dir.
This will restore your registry to the way it was before you installed any programs.
You may have to install some progs again, but your system will most likely work again.
