Hi everyone,

I would like to install NT 4.0 workstation on my Win 95 PC and make it dual boot. Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to go about doing it? Thanks.

Hi

Nothing is easier !

From Win95, insert the NT4 CD, and click on upgrade/install.
After all the files have been copied, reboot your PC and enter the NT wizard !

I assume the 1st partition of your HD is FAT16. If it is FAT32, that's gonna be a bit difficult because NT needs the 1st partition to be FAT16 (if dual boot with 95/98).

Careful - the link BEN gave has a few details wrong about NT service packs - the service pack is the absolute last thing you want to install as it works off a snap-shot of what it finds in your system. That won't do you much good if you haven't already installed all your hardware. You have to re-run the service pack after each new device install or driver update. Doesn't matter how many times you run it as long as it's always the last thing run. So - install everything - then run the service pack last - not first. For absolute best results - if time is no object, you could run the service pack after each hardware install.

Also - the latest NT4.0 server service pack is SP6a - so this page hasn't been updated in 4 months or so. (not that mine has either, but I have no tech info to update on my site - just pictures)

Otherwise - it looks okay.

Axel, I think you SP advice is good advice in general, but you need to be careful. My graphics card clearly states in the manual: "If you are using Windows NT, you need to update your operating system to Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later before installing your ATI graphics accelerator."

I made this mistake, and NT kept booting to the Blue Screen of Death. I had to reinstall NT. When in doubt, read the directions...

It's probably not a bad idea to do your SP upgrade directly after installing NT, then reinstall SP again once all of your drivers, etc. are loaded.

I want to bac VanMac up on the need to install at least SP3 right off the bat...I had the same problem with my graphics card (Diamond A50) when I first built my machine. It simply REFUSED to boot to anything except the default video driver.

I ended up returning the video card and exchanged it and got the same thing...then someone told me to try installing the service pack first and then install the video drivers...worked like a charm.

It can be pretty important to remember in a jam.

Sam.

I had the same problem with the A55. I got a Savage4 and NT only allows 256colours, because it only supports DX4.
