I just installed the OEM version of Windows 2000 and i noticed allmost none of my current software seemed to work right. It isnstalled all of the drivers for my hardware and it was a big test to get my good video drivers to work. I was just wondering what all of you thought about it as an upgrade from win 98. Is it worth the upgrade or should i just stick with windows 98 where all of my software is compatible?
OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer - I.E. - someone like HP made the machine and the version of the software you have was designed for HP machine specifically.
So - if you have a Compaq and you are running the HP OEM upgrade Win2000 on it - that would cause problems.
Next - Win2000 is an upgrade to winNT4.0 server. I seriously doubt it will even work with a base of win98. What you wanted was the Windows Millenium upgrade - at least that's the current code name out for the next step past win98.
I'd say read the fine print and look up the system requirements on the box just one more time.
Where'd you get it? - Did you follow the saleman's directions to the letter ( that could be your problem - most salesmen don't know a computer from a stereo )

If You Choose to Upgrade:
Check your BIOS and compatibility
See Important Upgrade Issues for critical information about BIOS (basic input/output system) and compatibility issues when upgrading to Windows 2000. Visit the compatibility area for tools to help you make sure your system is ready for the upgrade to Windows 2000. If you need updates, contact your hardware or software manufacturer.
For better success, try a clean install
In certain Windows 98 or Windows 95 upgrade situations, you may prefer to do a new installation (or "clean install"), rather than an upgrade of Windows 2000. By installing the operating system from scratch, you place the operating system in a known state and avoid migrating any problems that may have exisited in the previous configuration. However, a clean install requires reformatting your hard disk, so you must back up your data, install Windows 2000, reinstall your applications, and then reload your data from backup.
