Happy New Year To All!!
Three problems/bugs in Win98SE.
1)After rebooting, Windows Explorer does not open in the usual format of "C" drive with sub-directories opened below it like it use to. Now it is only showing "My Computer" not expanded. I have to open all the sub-directories myself (I know, "WHAAA!")it's just not the "norm". Once I've opened one time it seems to be normal thereafter.
2) EVERYTIME I try to start my dial up after a restart, I get no response from the modem. The only way I can get any response is to go to the modem properties and do a diagnostic check (More Info). After that, DUN works fine.
3) And lastly but not least, GPF(Blue Screen o' Death) every time I try to Shut Down the PC but O.K. for restarts.

Stats:
1) ALL updates and patches implemented
2) APM's disabled and removed from system and BIOS
3) BIOS is up to date
4) ALL drivers up to date
5) All troubleshooting done from MSKB
6) Running on a home built PII 450MHz Dual:
GigaByte MB GA-6BXD, one of two PII's installed,256 Mb SDRAM pc100 DIMM, two (AGP/PCI) CL/GB Riva TNT video cards w/16Mb each, USR Voice/Fax PRO USB ext. modem, no overclocking, two Seagate Medalist Pro's 9.2G partitioned by 4 each, CL PC-DVD Encore DXr3, Smart&Friendly CDRW.
There's more but hopefully not needed.

Start off with running "SFC" from the "run" line dialog box.

For your folders Open one of them up and configure it the way you want and then click on VIEW --> Folder Options-->the VIEW tab -->and in the Folder views box click on "LIKE CURRENT FOLDER http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

As for your modem I would suggest that if you dont find corrupted files with the "SFC" that you uninstall Dial-up networking and then RE-install it. you might also do this with your modem http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Thank you for the input but no-joy on all counts. SFC found no corrupted files, uninstalled and re-installed both DUN and modem and Explorer is still acting the same at start up.

I can't believe that you want to have Explorer open with the folders open. I explicitly searched the net for a way to get rid of it! Anyway here is what you should do:

1: Right click your explorer shortcut
2: Change the target to: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e, c:\

(you can open any folder you like by substituting c:\ with for example c:\windows\system)

Another way is to simply search your drive for explorer.exe and then right click it, drag to a place on the desktop and then choose "create shortcut". Double clicking the shortcut should open explorer with c:\ open

Thank you but I tried that a while back. My priority right now is getting Win98SE to shut down correctly, the others I can live with for now.
Don't know if this will help but I've run all my RAM diagnostics and System shows no signs of conflicts or IO addressing problems but the same memory range comes up at shut down attempt:
GPF: "0D @ 0167:00000CBA"
The error points to RAM but I've already swapped it out with no changes.

Have you turned off "fast shutdown" in the advanced section of MSCONFIG ?

Yes, unfortunately that was the first thing I checked for but Win98SE does not have it in MSCNFG. A drill through the registry turned up a few items but were all disabled.

Sorry for not being able to be more concrete, but all problems I've experienced with shutdown difficulties have been related to:

1: Networking issues.

2: Power management features (which you evidently have already eliminated).

3: "Smart" virus killers running in the background (Such as Norton Antivirus).

In short: get rid of everything running in the background (look in the system tray and click CTRL+ALT+DELETE once to bring up the "close program dialog". Look for stuff that doesn't need to be running)

Guess what? Already been there and did that...
Thanks though.

Have you downloaded the Win98SE shutdown fix from the microsoft website? Have you installed the other patches from there too?

My own issues with the win98 SE shut-down issue were resolved when I made an adjustment in the bios.

Specifically, if I ENABLED the assignment of an IRQ for VGA in bios, the problem did not occur. If I DISABLED the assignment of an IRQ for VGA, then the shut-down problem showed up on my PC.....go figure.

My board is an ABIT BX6-v2

Guess that is something else you could look at as well.

As to the MS patches and updates, yes I have them and there are all current. As for the BIOS IRQ assignment, I did try both ways with no resolution.
Thank you both.
