If it hangs there it's most likely a bad install of windows (or its corupt). If it runs in safemode then its your drivers or things in your start-up menu, disable all items taks manager (ctrl-alt-del once); only leave explorer open. Try again, if it works then you know what to do each time you need to defrag. Hope this helps, Chaostician "If its not a challenge, then give it to someone to whom it is!" grandslammer 12-29-1999, 07:49 AM I hate to paste a from letter, but I've given somany people this advice, that Isaved it in a word doc. Hope this helps you. I'm not being condescending, I jus tdon't know what you know. Running scandisk and defrag once a week helps keep your system running at its peak. There are a couple of things you need to do to make sure nothing stops these processes in mid-stream. The problem is, if something is running in the background, it MAY stop defrag in the middle of its run, and cause it to re-start. This will make it take a substantially LONGER time to complete. Before you start your scandisk/defrag tasks, RIGHT click an empty space on your desktop. Then click on properties. Now, click on screensaver tab. Select none. Then go down to Energy Saving Features, then click on settings. In this window, at the top, select Always on, and in the next three boxes select never, never, and of course, never.... Then click OK, then OK again... Now, from your desktop, hit ctrl/alt/del ONE TIME. A "Close Program" window will pop up. From this window select (one at a time) all the "running" programs EXCEPT explorer (not windows explorer or Internet explorer!, just plain EXPLORER) and systray. This way, there SHOULD BE NOTHING running in the background to interrupt your defrag. Now go ahead and run scandisk, then defrag. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scandisk, THEN Disk Defragmenter. If you do this once a week or so, you will be able to keep your system running up to its potential. Mike P. pickel 01-01-2000, 10:09 PM Well said Mike. Anti-virus, in my experience was the worst offender on a defrag and even scandisc. I use the Norton utilities now and they seem not only faster but make my computer work better.Good luck Mr K the pickel SysOpt.com
