I am thinking about replacing my modem. I can't seem to get above 31200bps and i think it is my modem.

I have a Boca Research Tidalwave 56k right now. i don't really know what to check too see if I can make this thing faster. So i am debating getting a new modem...

what is the fastest non-ISDN modem to get????

thanks

It's not your modem, it's your phone lines.

3Com/USR 56k v.90 here too. But I must say my old Cardinal 33.6 fax/modem was very good also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if your Phone line is analogue it won't matter what modem you have it won't go above 31200bps. Untill your telephone co upgrades your line to digital your stuck with that

Its both lines and modem
I have had a compaq 56k that could only get 36000. Now I have a Diamond supraexpress V.90 that gets 44000. I would expect higher from such a good quality modem (won it in some giveaway..so no money outta my pocket anyways). Earthlink is my ISP (one of the top rated) I would expect at least 50666 if not 53666, So i think its the phone lines from here on up

I think it's the ISP.

My old dialup wouldn't go above 31200, but the same line runs an ADSL, so it's not the line quality. Check what modem chipsets your ISP supports.

Maybe your ISP has a different number you can access at higher speeds.

I think that the problem is in your phone line. I also have a Boca Tidalwave modem. I always connect at 44000bps to 46000bps. I have been very happy with this modem.

Check your line And ISP by the following:
Call the USR linnets number to test your phone line. Call the other ISP numbers to see if its your provider.

Ripped from http://808hi.com/56k/trouble4.htm

In order to really test your modem you need to call more than just 1 (your ISP's) number. If you are not getting 56k connects, you should try your modem with other local/toll/toll-free numbers.

This is a list of some toll-free numbers, the 3Com "Line Test" Number (a toll-call), and links to various ISP local access number listings.

1-847-262-6000 - USR Linnets number - this is a toll call; if you log-in as "Line Test" with a v.34 modem, it will attempt to determine if your line will support 56k connections.

The following numbers use toll circuits but are free to the caller (as long as you don't log in):
1-800-590-4857 - (IBM Global network access # x2 and V.90 3Com Server)
1-800-784-3638 - (Netcom - supports V.90)
1-888-861-8490 - (MCI/Worldcom))
1-888-245-0113 - (AOL access x2)
1-800-716-0023 - (AOL alternate access)
1-888-296-3892 - (AT&T Worldnet accessV.90,x2)
1-800-638-1483 - (GTE Net access - V.90/K56Flex Ascend Server)
1-800-572-1959 - (Compuserve V.90,x2)
1-800-350-6885 - (Earthlink - V.90,x2)
1-800-853-7921 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-534-7097 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-304-4226 - (Shore.net - Flex)
1-800-320-4509 - (Ascend 56KFlex test line)
1-800-779-2966 - (Used to be MCI)

>cal , you'd get a driver from 3Com's website.

The best modem is probably a USR Courier v.90. I wouldn't buy one, however, because they are expensive at ~$200. I'd much rather have the plain old USR Sportster v.90. It is a nice hardware-based modem that works well with Linux and older computers. You can put it in a 486 with Linux and use it as a porxy server with IP masquerading and the dialer daemon.

Something we adjusted worked wonders for my modem.

thanks, i guess i will keep the one i have!!!
