I am getting two computers (monitors included) from one of my co-workers for free, but they have Win 3.11 on them, one has 48megs of ram the other one "is slower". In other words, they are SLOW. Any suggestions about what to do with them?

Do you know what processors they have? I think you can install Windows 98 Lite on a 486.

I have my neighbors 486,with 66mhz cpu, 20mb ram, and 1/2 gigHD running win 95 not the greatest but she uses it for email and the net.

Or you could use it to set up a firewall

Go buy a couple of dirt cheap ISA 10baseT network cards, and have fun setting up a small Linux network. Use them for firewalling and/or proxy hosting. The one with 48meg of memory could easily host a small http or ftp server as well.
Otherwise, you could try donating them to a local school or charity. Then determine their "estimated http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif" value, then do a small tax write off.
Or find a relative without a computer. Put a cheap 28.8 modem in them, install Win95, and set them up a freewwweb.com account. Several people would just like to surf and email, and don't require the monsterous systems that we tend to think we need.
Good Luck,

I would definetly second robrich, sugestion to fix up for some one who can use them,
would much rather see these simpler machines put to use than takeing up landfill space.

If you still like doom, than keep them for a sweet doom network... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
But otherwise I'd do what robrich has said...

Yes, donate them or keep one with a faster modem for stand-alone downloading. Also DOS based applications like Word Perfect v. 5.1 really do great on such systems. Could really help some organization out. I gave my mother-in-law a Gateway 75 Mhz and at 85+ she surfs the Net and emails instead of telephoning from cross country all the time.
